Advanced Black and White

If you have a scan or digital file you want to print in black and white, it might be best do this on an Epson printer with the Advanced Black and White Setting. This setting works a bit differently because it requires that the printer controls the colors. It is worth experimenting with, because the results are worth it. All of the Epson printers have this feature and will work the same way.

First this is to choose your image, make sure it is sized correctly and choose your correct paper size. For this example I am going to print a 6×9 on letter sized paper on an Epson 3880.

The first thing I do is change the color management to Printer Manages Colors.  Once that is done, click Print Settings at the top to open the printer dialog box. You will then change the Color Matching to Epson.

Click the button for Epson Color Controls. This is what enables the use of the Advanced Black and White Settings.

Next click the drop down menu to go to Printer Settings. This is where you choose Advanced Black and White.

Once you choose Advanced Black and White you have a few options. Neutral tends to be the best setting to start with.

Cool gives the prints a bluer look, warm will go more yellow and sepia is a browner tone. Neutral does an excellent job of removing the other colors and keeping looking more black and white. When you have all of these settings set your dialog box will look like this.

If you are on a 3880 or one of the larger printers you will have the choice for Finest Detail or Super MicroWeave, which you will want to make sure is checked. If you are on a P800, you will not have that option. Click Save, then click Print. If you have any questions please ask a lab worker. The most important settings are making Printer Manages Color and in Color Matching making sure that Epson Color Controls is selected.
