UNT Snags First Victory At WKU

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – A 16-0 run by North Texas women's basketball to begin the fourth quarter propelled the Mean Green to the first win at Western Kentucky in program history in a 76-67 victory Saturday afternoon inside E.A. Diddle Arena.

Anisha George scored a game-high 16 points, while Callie Owens tied her career-high of 13, eight of which came in the fourth quarter. Terriell Bradley registered 12, and Grace Goodhart added 11, also scoring eight in the final period. The 76 points scored was the highest total by UNT (12-11, 5-6 C-USA) in league play this season, as was the 49 percent shooting from the field. The Mean Green pulled down 37 rebounds compared to 24 by WKU (14-11, 8-3 C-USA) for their highest positive margin in a C-USA contest this season.

"I am extremely proud," head coach Jalie Mitchell said. "It was all heart, all pride, and all passion. We fought through our mistakes. It was so great to see how we worked together for 40 minutes. Callie was huge. She calls herself a 3-point shooter, but today she was an animal driving to the basketball and hitting the boards."

North Texas entered the final quarter down 59-56 before Goodhart drilled a pair of pull-up jumpers, and Bradley hit two from the free throw line. Another Goodhart bucket with 7:38 to play put UNT up 64-59, and on the next offensive possession Owens picked up loose ball under the hoop and placed it in. Goodhart, Owens, and Bradley each scored again to give the Mean Green their largest lead of 72-59 with 3:35 to play.

UNT found themselves down 14-6 six minutes into the contest before Velma Mitchell sank a 3 from the left wing, and Brittany Smith made a drive from the right side to cut the lead to three. Madison Townley, who collected a game-high nine rebounds, grabbed one of her five offensive boards on the day and put it back as time expired with the Lady Toppers ahead, 19-15.

The second quarter was close throughout and included several ties and lead changes. Charlene Shepherd entered the game midway through and immediately contributed with an and-one and a jumper for a 33-32 North Texas advantage at the 2:37 mark.

George made two from the line and hit a shot in the post to open the second half for a 41-40 Mean Green lead, and Deja Terrell drilled a 3 from the top of the key as the shot clock expired to keep the one-point edge. Bradley sank a 3-pointer from the right corner at the 5:53 mark, but North Texas did not score another field goal until a layup by Owens with 1:14 on the clock and WKU leading 58-53.

"We have some really great players and high energy players," said Owens. "Tonight the floor was so spread out so it makes it easier to drive the lanes. Playing in these games are always so fun and the game just comes to you."

The Mean Green return home for a four game home stand beginning with FAU Feb. 14 at 7 p.m.
