About Us

Who We Are

Recreational Sports is located in the state-of-the-art 138,000 square-foot Pohl Recreation Center and offers an incredible array of programs and experiences to support and inspire the wellness of the UNT Community. We’re also one of the largest employers of students on campus, working with nearly 300 student employees a year in every program area to develop their work experience and leadership skills. More than just a place to exercise, we pride ourselves on being a welcoming, engaging, and supportive family aimed at bringing faculty, staff, and students together. The result is a holistic approach to wellness that inspires an increase in physical health, lifelong habits and learned skills, stress relief and higher GPA’s for Rec Center users versus non-users. Fitness

The fitness program oversees a spectacular 14,500 sq. ft. weight room with over 100 pieces of cardio equipment, along with a variety of free weights and weight machines. For more structured fitness routines we have nationally certified personal trainers who work one-on-one with clients to create custom training programs and personal guidance and support. The certified group exercise staff instruct over 40 classes a week including cycle, kickboxing, Pilates, Zumba, and multiple yoga classes.

Intramural Sports

UNT students versus UNT students! Major team sports include flag football, outdoor and indoor soccer, basketball, softball, and volleyball. Intramurals also offers single day events including racquetball, tennis, PS4 tournaments, and many more. Divisions for men, women, and co-rec teams are offered for most events, as well as competitive and non-competitive leagues, residence hall, and fraternity leagues. Winners receive a coveted intramural champion t-shirt!

Outdoor Pursuits

The Outdoor Pursuits program includes a 45-foot indoor climbing wall and bouldering wall with free climbing events throughout each semester, as well as instructional clinics for top rope and lead climbing. The Outdoor Pursuits Center rents high quality outdoor equipment like tents, sleeping bags, canoes, kayaks, and more for all of your outdoor excursions. It also serves as the hub for the adventure trips and clinic program, leading groups on day, weekend, and extended trips to state and national parks around the region…all designed for beginners. Free clinics range from star gazing and kayak roll to outdoor photography and backcountry cooking tips.

Sport Clubs

Sport Clubs provide an opportunity for UNT students to compete against other colleges and universities in the Texas region and nationally. Our 33 clubs compete recreationally and competitively and welcome all those interested in the sport, regardless of skill level. From wakeboard to equestrian, lacrosse and soccer to ultimate, paintball, volleyball, running, rugby and more, you’re sure to find a club to fit your passion. If we don’t offer your sport then we’ll work with you to help create the club you want.

Aquatics

Overseeing a lap and leisure pool, as well as a 29 person spa, the aquatics program offers instructional classes such as adult and child swim classes, private swim lessons, and lifeguard certification and recertification courses.

Informal Recreation

Informal recreation offers drop-in activity in basketball, indoor soccer, racquetball, swimming, badminton, volleyball and even tailgate games. Equipment can be checked out at no charge at the Rec Center and the Waranch Tennis Complex which offers 12 lighted tennis courts.

Esports

Esports at UNT is a varsity program that is dedicated to developing, guiding, and encouraging our varsity players to compete at the highest level within the collegiate arena, as well as training and facilitating the competitive growth of each player and team. Varsity teams include Hearthstone, League of Legends, Heroes of the Storm, and Overwatch. Esports also supports students in the gaming community through club and intramural competitions.
