Beginning classes (violin, viola, cello, bass, and harp) for children 3rd grade (and up) take place twice a week (Beginning in the fall and continuing into the spring). The 11-week semesters follow the university’s academic calendar. Students must provide their own instruments or rent them from a local music store. Our staff will measure each student and recommend the appropriate instrument size.
 
HARP
Level 1 and 2
Group classes meet on Tuesdays at 4:30 and 5:30 PM respectively. The second class of the week will be scheduled with the private harp teacher for a total of eight private lessons. Harps will not meet with the group on Thursdays.
 
Tuition: $275 per semester or $530 per year (includes registration fee)
 
VIOLIN, VIOLA, CELLO, BASS
Parent/Child Beginning Class
This is a beginning strings class designed for a parent (or guardian; grandparent) and child aged 6-9 to learn together and practice together.  Classes meet once per week and include three private lessons to be arranged with a private teacher at a different time. Tuition covers one child and one adult together.
 
Tuition: $220 per semester or $420 per year (includes registration fee)
Group Class: Wednesdays 5:30 to 6:30 PM
 
Level 1
Beginner level strings class for students grades 3 – 7 that meets twice per week. During their first year, students develop a foundation in string playing technique in a class taught by an experienced lead teacher and two assistants. The instruction is Suzuki based and will emphasize ear training using familiar songs. Beginning class students do not need to be able to read music or have had previous musical experience. 
  • Tuition: $230 per semester or $430 per year (includes registration fee)
  • Group Classes: Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:30 to 5:30 PM
  • Private lesson option: Private lessons (4 or 8 per semester) are optional. Times will be scheduled with an individual teacher.
Level 2
The second-year class that follows Level 1 and meets twice per week for grades 4-8. During their second year, students continue to develop their foundation of good string playing technique in a class taught by an experienced lead teacher and at least two assistants. Level 2 students will build on their repertoire and skills learned in Level 1 and begin to learn how to read notes. Prerequisite skills for Level 2 are the ability to play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (theme and variations) and Are You Sleeping? with correct instrument/bow position, intonation, and clear tone.

Pre-Orchestra Level
 
Students continue to work on technique and begin to develop skills needed to play in an ensemble. Students practice note reading and playing harmony, melody, and bass lines using the book Learning Together: Sequential Repertoire for Solo Strings or String Ensemble Books 1 and 2. Classes meet twice per week.

UNT Youth Orchestra
 
Youth orchestra members are expected to have solid music reading skills, ability to play in an ensemble with at least three parts, experience following a conductor, and a strong foundation in instrumental technique. 
  • Tuition: $135 per semester or $235 per year (includes registration)

UNT Eclectic Styles Orchestra
 
Eclectic styles orchestra is for students with orchestral experience and advanced instrumental technique. This group is by recommendation only. The ensemble will play fiddle, jazz, pop, rock, and world music selections. Students will learn techniques specific to eclectic styles as well as gain more advanced orchestral experience.
  • Tuition: $135 per semester or $235 per year (includes registration)
  • Group Class: Mondays 5:30pm to 6:30pm

For Instrument Rentals, there will be a few instruments at UNT for rent $75 per year. Otherwise, we will always partner with Crossroads-based The Luthier Shop.
Please keep in mind that we are unable to provide refunds after the first week of classes. We cannot prorate tuition.
