Spring 2019 SMART Talk to Feature Dr. Rebecca Dickstein

This spring, the College of Science is excited to host the University of North Texas' third-ever SMART Talk, featuring Dr. Rebecca Dickstein. Dr. Dickstein is an influential researcher, member of the BioDiscovery Institute, and UNT professor of biochemistry and molecular biology. In her eighteen years at the University, twenty-seven graduate and postdoc students and more than fifty undergraduates have conducted research toward their degrees in her lab.

Making Computers Understand Negation

Eduardo Blanco, an assistant professor with the University of North Texas College of Engineering, intends to use a $500,000 NSF Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER) grant to teach computers the intricacies of negation. The five-year grant will allow Blanco to build novel resources and algorithms to enable intelligent systems to understand the numerous positive interpretations hidden in sentences containing negation.

Two Koreas: UNT professor researches how to bring a divided community together again

Sixty-plus years after the Korean Peninsula was officially split into two separate governments, a University of North Texas professor is looking for ways to bring the two countries together. Hospitality associate professor Young Hoon Kim, a UNT researcher born in South Korea, is studying how tourism and destination development can bring people together and reunify the two nations.

Drone Traffic Management Taking Off

Kamesh Namuduri, professor of electrical engineering at the University of North Texas, has joined forces with the Lone Star UAS Center of Excellence & Innovation at Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi on a NASA project focused on research toward safely and effectively managing drone traffic in urban areas.

Researcher Teaching Robots to Learn by Themselves

Department of Electrical Engineering Assistant Professor Xiangnan Zhong is researching ways to make robots smarter. The UNT Engineering faculty member recently received a $175,000 Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Research Initiation Initiative (CRII) grant from the National Science Foundation, an award that recognizes up-and-coming faculty in the career pathway that is expected to lead to research independence and a subsequent stream of projects, discoveries, students and publications.

Du to Study Advanced Glass Materials with Fulbright Scholarship

Department of Materials Science and Engineering Professor Jincheng Du recently received a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award to research the nature of phase separations in glass materials and their biomedical applications.“Biomedical applications of inorganic glasses represents one of the most exciting developments in glass science and technology that has the potential to help to solve the healthcare problems of our aging population," said Du.

Three UNT Researchers say the Future of Cybersecurity is in the Hands of Criminal Justice Education

Dr. Scott Belshaw, associate professor; Dr. Brooke Nodeland, assistant professor and online master of science in criminal justice degree coordinator; and Dr. Mark Saber, lecturer, recommend that cybersecurity courses be integrated into criminal justice programs to bridge the gap between traditional law enforcement expectations and responding to new cyber threats.
