Justin Lavacek received a PhD in music theory from the Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University. His dissertation formalizes an approach to contrapuntal and textual meaning in Machaut’s creative counterpointing of borrowed tenors in the motets.  An article forthcoming in Integral will present that new framework.  His invited review of a new book on Ars nova motets will appear in Music Theory Online in 2016.  Aside from medieval music, Dr. Lavacek has published on the harmonic planning of Mozart’s secco recitatives in Theoria 22 (2015) and will present on Schenker’s concept of double mixture, particularly concerning the identity of bIV in the music of Chopin, at regional conferences in 2016.  In 2015, he travelled to the Czech Republic to present on and premier his completion of a manuscript sketch by Jan Dismas Zelenka.
