UNT alumni chapters are gearing up for a series of mixers across Texas this spring. Alumni are invited to stop by after work for drinks, flavorful appetizers and plenty of time to mix and mingle with fellow UNT alumni. These casual gatherings attract alumni of all ages and interests, making them perfect events for those just stepping into networking or for alumni looking to meet fellow Eagles who share their Mean Green pride.

With convenience in mind, all spring mixers are hosted at new or notable restaurants near heavy concentrations of UNT alumni. “We put a lot of care into finding mixer locations with a lot of energy and buzz,” says Kasey Kamenicky, director of regional programming for the UNT Alumni Association. “We’re originals here at UNT. We like to explore and try new things, so I know our alums will have as much fun sampling these awesome food and drink menus as they will getting to chat with fellow alumni and catch up with UNT.”

Alumni are encouraged to attend any chapter mixer that is convenient to them, regardless of where they live or work. UNT alumni chapters do not require membership, but UNT Alumni Association memebers receive a discounted ticket price. “To have someone step forward like the Ryans have is just amazing,” says Marilyn Wiley, dean of the College of Business. “To name the college is associating it with a person and the business success Brint Ryan has had, starting with his accounting degree at UNT, is so amazing. It tells our students, ‘Look at the possibilities, look what you can become.’ It’s an opportunity that resonates.”

The room is buzzing — there are handshakes and congratulations and speculation as to what this kind of money will ultimately do for the College of Business’ reputation and its nearly 5,800 students. For Ryan, though, there’s no question what the money will accomplish: It will provide students hungry for success a clear path forward.

“The legacy’s nice, and I'm going to enjoy that with my family, but what's really important to me is giving back and giving others like me the opportunity to do what I've done,” he says. “I think this gift will be transformational, and I think it’s going to give others an even better foundation to work from than what I had.”

A University of North Texas G. Brint Ryan College of Business student was the first woman to win IBM’s collegiate coding contest, Master the Mainframe, last year – and now, she’s done it again.

The win by senior Anna McKee marks the third consecutive time a UNT student has won the competition. Anna is one of two winners and the only woman to win this year for the North American region. Her performance also resulted in McKee being ranked in the top three competitors globally—the only woman in the winning group. 

 “When I competed in Master the Mainframe in September 2017, I thought that the whole competition was judged on how long it took to complete,” said McKee. “I worked like crazy to work through all three parts and finished in just two weeks. What I didn’t realize was that only the first two parts of the contest are based on time and that I actually had until the end of December to complete the third and hardest challenge. I was shocked when I found out that I’d won.”

Julia Christina Ayalde Camacho, a student in the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science and Xuexia Wang, an associate professor and researcher of statistics in UNT’s Department of Mathematics, are working together as mentor and student to explore new ways to apply computational biology and statistics to cancer research.

 “Working with my mentor, Dr. Wang, has been a great learning experience. She advised me in developing a computer program that predicts the occurrence of secondary central nervous system cancer through ensemble machine learning methods,” said Camacho. 

Camacho created a computer program that accepts data from many different patients who survived childhood cancer, learns from that data and predicts the possibility of secondary nervous system cancer as an adult...

The University of North Texas College of Information was recently awarded a three-year, $359,879 grant by the National Science Foundation to develop and operate three 10-week intensive programs that will allow students to immerse themselves in data analytics and conduct research in the field.

The program, which aims to provide a supportive and engaging learning environment, is targeting students from populations typically underrepresented in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields, such as Hispanic, African-American and female students, according to Junhua Ding, information science professor and principle investigator.

As a REU site, UNT will provide lectures, workshops, research seminars and other activities to enhance participants’ research experience. Students will be housed on campus at no cost. Each will receive a $5,000 stipend along with money for food and materials.
