Recently, University of North Texas College of Business alumnus Zachary Fleming shared some insights into his experience in healthcare management and as an MBA student and graduate.

Zachary Fleming is General Manager of Digital Health Technology at Baylor Scott & White Health (BSWH) and holds an MBA in Strategic Management from UNT. BSWH is the largest not-for-profit healthcare system in Texas, and Zachary’s role is to solve problems using innovative, digital solutions “to... make healthcare the way it should be.” Zachary shares, “We are investing in AI, Automation, and other modern technologies to transform our operations, improve our consumer experience, and decrease the costs of accessing healthcare”

Two years ago, Zachary's department and career path did not even exist in healthcare but has quickly become foundational for all innovative systems throughout the US. Here is some advice that Zachary shares for others seeking innovation and leadership within their own (sometimes nonlinear) career paths:
“Before you make any decisions about a job/career, define (1) what makes you passionate (2) what you can do well that others cannot and (3) where there is opportunity. Your job, boss, and roles will change daily so do not let those define your path.”

While studying at UNT, Zachary credits Dr. Joan Hubbard for providing an “amazing educational experience” and says that her HR Management Seminar provided a wealth of resources that were directly tied to events occurring in the world today. He says, “Having the chance to learn in a way that can be applied post-college was an invaluable part of my experience while at UNT.”

He encourages current students and recent graduates in this way, “Actively seek out measurable opportunities that demonstrate your hunger for learning. This can be a LinkedIn article translating what blockchain really means to the c-suite or building a Facebook chat bot that you can share real-time. Clubs, certifications, and courses lay a good foundation but very rarely will it be the deciding factor for if you get promoted or hired to the open Sr. position. In an AI-fueled world, your ability to translate knowledge, think independently, and lead others is paramount…. Seek long-term success by focusing on the positives of today.”
