AUSTIN - After four years of seeing little change, the 2016 results for the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) for grades 3-8 are on the rise. Thirteen of the 17 assessments showed gains – some as much as nine percentage points – when compared to 2015 passing standards.
On this day in Texas education history: On July 13, 1984, Governor Mark White signed into law House Bill 72. Passed by the 68th Legislature, HB 72 was an historic education reform bill in response to growing concern over deteriorating literacy among Texas schoolchildren over two decades, reflected in student scores on standardized tests. Academic achievement was set as a priority in public education with stricter attendance rules, adoption of a no-pass, no-play rule (prohibiting students who were failing courses from participating in sports and other extracurricular activities for a six-week period), a 22-pupil limit in elementary schools, and high school graduation tests were all provisions of the law. Many of those elements remain in place today. #txed
Districts, please note this To the Administrator Addressed letter from Commissioner Morath, which addresses a correction window for STAAR Results and changes to the 2016 state accountability ratings release schedule. #txed
