Fall 2016 Semester Report on Experiential Learning and Community Engagement

According to several access points of reporting, students have engaged in experiential learning and community service during the fall 2016 semester. There are several avenues in which experiential learning is offered, promoted, encouraged, and recorded on campus. Query and TK20 reports are run to pull numbers and demographics of our students who engage in easily identifiable experiential courses such as internships, capstone, student teaching, and practicum. We also rely on students who self-report through surveys and College Central Network. We also look at data from the SERCH institute service opportunities. As a member institution of Campus Compact, all of this data is important to submit in our annual membership survey on community engagement. Listed are a few of our highlights:

Query Report of Students Enrolled in Courses

155* students were enrolled one or multiple of the following courses:

• 74 students were enrolled in an internship this semester
• 56 students were enrolled in a capstone this semester
• 25 students were enrolled in a practicum this semester

Experiential Learning Module (ELM)

13 students submitted their experiential activity using the ELM, in total 500+ hours were recorded from seniors and juniors in the following majors: Sociology, Psychology, and Human Services Management and Leadership.

Service to the Community

116 students participated in the first ever “Jags Give Back” service days in the surrounding community.

Self- Reports through Surveys

34 graduating seniors each submitted a minimum of 100 hours of experiential learning in internships, service learning, community projects, and/ or volunteerism.

• Continuous incoming self-reports from students currently indicate a total of 1,779 hours of experiential learning and/or volunteerism

TK20 Reports

23 students each completed 560 hours of student teaching. Full report available upon request.

Campus Compact

UNT Dallas is currently a member of Campus Compact, which advances the public purposes of colleges and universities by deepening their ability to improve community life and to educate students for civic and social responsibility. They challenge all of higher education to make civic and community engagement an institutional priority. As a member, our institution is required to submit an Annual Membership Survey to contribute to the Campus Compact national data collection, providing the opportunity for aggregating national data and comparing across institutions, the annual survey also provides a mechanism for campus based information gathering that supports subsequent applications for the Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement and/or the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll and enables evaluation of campus community engagement efforts. The information collected is also useful to communicate internally about institutional community engagement strategies, outcomes, and impact. Campus Compact puts special emphasis on partnerships to support student success and civic learning across the education continuum. Campus Compact’s work strengthens colleges and universities as contributors to educational improvement now while developing the next generation of citizens and leaders for our communities.
