ESPN reporter Tim MacMahon’s advice to students is simple: “If you want to succeed in this business, get as much experience as possible.”

He knows firsthand the value of experience. While a journalism student at UNT, he worked at The North Texas Daily and at the campus radio station.

“That to me is the best part of the education here is that I got that kind of experience,” he said.

He covers the Dallas Cowboys and Dallas Mavericks for ESPNDallas.com, where he’s versatile as a journalist. Not only does he write stories for the website, but he blogs and also does on-air reports for the radio station.

One aspect of the job that he enjoys at ESPNDallas.com is being able to express his opinions while doing traditional beat work.

“They kind of let us have our own voice while covering these teams,” he said.

He joined ESPNDallas.com after having worked for six years at The Dallas Morning News where he reported on sports ranging from high school to professional. He also worked at the Denton Record-Chronicle from 1999 to 2003.

MacMahon graduated with a bachelor’s degree in journalism in 2003.
