UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES, UNT. POLICY & PROCEDURE MEMORANDUM

TABLE OF CONTENTS

I. SUMMARY

The Music Library houses reserves for music classes. Materials on reserve in the Music Library may include books, scores, recordings, photocopies, or other personal items. Different policies and procedures apply to the various formats:

II. BOOKS AND SCORES

There are two options for putting books and scores on reserve:

  1. Reserve lists consisting of roughly five or less items may be placed on reserve behind the Music Services Desk, where students may request them for in-library use. These materials circulate for two hours at a time.

  2. For more substantial reserve lists, the best option is to reserve a carrel where students may access the materials without assistance. This option is particularly effective for seminars and other small classes in which a small number of students need access to large quantities of materials. Items on carrels may circulate for two hours, twenty-four hours, or three days, according to the instructor's discretion. Carrel reservations are limited, so it is imperative to make arrangements for a carrel early in the semester or before the semester begins.

III. RECORDINGS

Sound recordings course reserves are accessible at https://audioreserves.library.unt.edu; registered students and assigned instructors can log in with their EUIDs and play content anywhere.  Digital audio reserves are only accessible for the semester in question.

Due to the digital system, physical reserves for sound recordings will not be continued.  However, patrons wishing to access non-circulating items or older formats (LPs, cassette tapes, DATs) can do so by asking at the Music Services Desk during normal operating hours.  Four carrels in the northeast corner of the fourth floor are enabled for in-house listening.

To request audio items for reserve, teachers can send a list of LPCD call numbers and work titles or track numbers to Justin Lemons.  Maximum turnaround time is usually one week.

IV. OTHER MEDIA

Video cassettes and DVDs from the Music Library's collection (call numbers MVC and MDVD, respectively) can be placed on physical reserves at the Media Library; please contact Justin Lemons regarding this.

V. PERSONAL COPY MATERIALS

If the UNT Libraries do not own one or more desired reserve items, personal copies may be placed on reserve. Such materials should be clearly marked with the owner's name. Personal copies of books and scores are accessible by request for in-library use at the Music Services Desk, and they circulate for two hours at a time.

VI. PERIODICALS AND REFERENCE MATERIALS

Periodicals and Reference Materials may not be placed on reserve in the UNT Libraries.

Once items are placed on reserve, a library user may find reserves for a particular class by searching by course number or professor name in the Course Reserves section of the online catalog.

VII. REQUESTING MATERIALS FOR RESERVE

Materials requested less than one week prior to class use will be processed as soon as possible, but the library cannot guarantee processing by the requested date. Submissions may be made by e-mail to Justin Lemons (for books, scores, and recordings). All requests should include the following information:

  • Instructor name
  • Instructor ID number
  • Course number
  • Date materials are needed
  • Title
  • Author / composer
  • Publication date
  • Call number

Requests submitted without all of the above information will not be processed.  It is also helpful if a syllabus is submitted with reserve requests.
