Additional Tuition for Excessive Undergraduate Hours 

Texas Education Code § 54.014 specifies that resident undergraduate students who initially enrolled fall 1999 and later may be subject to a higher tuition rate for attempting excessive hours at any public institution of higher education while classified as a resident student for tuition purposes. Since fall 2007, UNT undergraduate students who are classified as Texas Residents and those who pay in statutory tuition rates are subject to an additional excessive hour tuition rate.

Students who enrolled initially in the fall 1999 semester or subsequent semesters cannot exceed more than 45 hours of the number of hours required for completion of the degree plan in which they are enrolled. Any hours beyond 45 are considered excessive and will result in additional tuition charges.

Students who enrolled initially in the fall 2006 semester or subsequent semesters cannot exceed more than 30 hours of the number of hours required for completion of the degree plan in which they are enrolled. Any hours beyond 30 are considered excessive and will result in additional tuition charges.

The current rate for excessive undergraduate hours is $455.00 per credit hour.

How do I appeal the Excessive Hours charge?

Fill out the Excessive Hours Hardship Appeal Form and turn it in to the Student Financial Services office located on the first floor of the Eagle Student Services Center. Once we have reviewed the appeal we will send an email regarding the decision. There are two options for appealing the excessive hours charge based on hardship:

1. Disability/Illness: Attach medical documentation or a determination letter from the UNT Office of Disability Accommodation.
2. Pell Grant Eligible: Pell Grant eligibility is based on the financial need as determined by a student’s Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) score. If you have applied for Financial Aid and submitted a FAFSA for the current academic year then Student Financial Services will grant the exemption as long as the EFC score qualifies

If you do not qualify under any of the above conditions you may send us a letter, including any other type of documentation, and email it to sfs@unt.edu detailing the hardship situation. The University will make a decision based on the information given and will inform you via email of the decision.

Additional Tuition for Repeated Courses 

Undergraduate students classified as Texas residents or who pay Texas resident tuition rates who attempt certain courses more than twice at the University of North Texas are subject to an additional tuition rate of $75.00 per semester credit hour for each repeated course.
