BUSINESS LAW PRACTICUM

Adjunct Professor Kathy Van Every will teach the Business Law Practicum in summer 2016. She earned her undergraduate degree in Finance from Cal State Long Beach and an MBA from Webster University, as well as a J.D. from Rutgers University School of Law. Before completing her undergraduate degree, she served in the U.S. Army working in Military Intelligence. While obtaining both her MBA and JD, she worked for organizations such as Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, United Technologies and L-3 Communications, where Kathy was a Vice President and General Counsel. In her diverse business law experience, she has overseen and been lead counsel on all manner of business law issues, including legal issues involving contracts, supply chain, intellectual property, export/import control, employment, commercial leases, environmental, and regulatory and trade compliance. After her extensive experience as in-house counsel, she opened her own law office, where she represents small and medium sized business clients, with the goal of helping clients find effective and affordable solutions across a range of legal, regulatory, and business aspects of complex domestic and international transactions.

ENERGY LAW PRACTICUM

Adjunct Professor Joseph R. Dancy will teach Energy Law Practicum in summer 2016. Over the last 22 years, he has taught courses in Oil & Gas, Oil & Gas Environmental Law, and Environmental Law at the SMU Dedman School of Law and the SMU Cox School of Business and serves as Faculty Advisor to the student-managed SMU Spindletop Energy Fund. He currently serves as President of LSGI Advisers, Inc. and manager of the LSGI Venture Fund, L.P., a private actively managed fund for SEC-accredited investors. He obtained his undergraduate degree in metallurgical engineering and mineral processing from Michigan Technological University, an MBA from University of Michigan, and a J.D. from Oklahoma City University Law School. His legal and business career has focused on oil and gas, energy, water, mining, debtor/creditor, bankruptcy and environmental issues, including practicing oil and gas and environmental law with private law firms in Oklahoma, serving as senior attorney with Enserch Corporation, and financial analysis and modeling of pipeline and business projects with TXU Corporation. He was appointed, at different times, by the Governor of Texas and the Governor of Oklahoma to serve as state delegate on the Interstate Oil & Gas Commission, and he has served on the Board of Directors of several private and state entities or foundations and is currently on the Board of Directors of a publicly listed NASDAQ manufacturing firm. He has presented and published numerous times on oil and gas, debtor/creditor, bankruptcy, and environmental topics, in forums that include the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation, Society of Petroleum Engineers, Oil & Gas Tax Quarterly, multiple law journals, and the International Conference of the International Association of Energy Economics.

TEXAS CRIMINAL PROCEDURE

Adjunct Professor Tim Cole will teach Texas Criminal Procedure in summer 2016. He graduated from UNT magna cum laude, and received his J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law with honors. He served four terms as the elected District Attorney for the 97th District of Texas from 1993 to 2006. Before that, he served as an Assistant District Attorney, as counsel to Texas Governor William Clements, and as General Counsel to the Texas District and County Attorneys Association. In the mid-1990's, the Governor appointed him to serve as the chairman of the Texas Council on Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorders. He is Board-Certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in Criminal Law and in Criminal Appellate Law. He has handled over 150 criminal jury trials at every offense level, including death penalty cases, and is in private criminal practice in Fort Worth.
