UNT Men Set To Host Inaugural Event At Maridoe

DENTON — In his decade at the helm of the UNT men's golf program, Brad Stracke hasn't had it.

In 2015, just the prospect of it was what drew Thomas Rosenmueller to North Texas from Munich, Germany.

When Rosenmueller and the rest of Stracke's crew tees off Saturday morning to open the Maridoe Intercollegiate at Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton, they'll finally have it — a tournament hosted on the Mean Green's home course that finally opened a year ago.

"I've been here for 10 years and we play roughly 12 or 13 events a year, so we've played more than 100 events where we haven't had a homefield advantage," Stracke said. "Now, we have one."

Rosenmueller, who is coming off a victory at the Trinity Forest Invitational in Dallas last week, said it will be nice to finally have a home-course advantage, especially on a course as challenging and unforgiving as the Maridoe.

"I'm looking forward to finally hosting a tournament at home, where you have the home advantage and can set it up the way it fits your players," said Rosenmueller, now a senior. "You know the course and how to play every possible pin. It's such a big advantage, especially on a course like Maridoe that will challenge you on every shot you have to have the highest precision possible."

Rosenmueller said having the chance to play the course whenever he wants has helped him and his teammates improve as golfers, even if the tournaments they play are on courses far different than the Maridoe.

"Playing Maridoe is an honor," Rosenmueller said. "It is a special place and it definitely helps playing there every day. You get better even though you might not break par out there. You go to a different course and it feels so much easier than it used to."

LAST TIME OUT: North Texas finished fifth out of 13 teams at the Trinity Forest Invitational on Sept. 23-25 in Dallas. Thomas Rosenmueller won the event at 13-under par, marking the first tournament title for a UNT player since Rosenmueller won a tournament as a freshman. Freshman Lenny Bergsson finished tied for 21st at 1-under, and senior Jordan Sanders tied for 26th at even-par.

INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR: The Mean Green feature six international players this year, and a seventh in freshman JP Lavalle, who was born in Mexico City but went to high school in The Woodlands, near Houston. Lenny Bergsson (Iceland), Viktor Forslund (Sweden), Vitek Novak (Czech Republic), Henri Renouard (France), Thomas Rosenmueller (Germany) and Kristof Ulenaers (Belgium) round out the international players.

STRACKE SAYS: "The guys are excited to play a familiar golf course this week. We have an exceptional field that will produce a competitive atmosphere at the Maridoe Intercollegiate."

UP NEXT: North Texas will travel east for the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational in Windermere, Florida, Oct. 21-23. The tournament is hosted by Central Florida.

HOME SWEET MARIDOE: North Texas enjoys its home course — the Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton. The course opened to members in July 2017 and gives the Mean Green a state-of-the-art home course with world-class facilities, including a fully-dedicated practice facility, complete with a two-ended driving range to account for many varying wind conditions, a sprawling three-acre short game retreat and indoor facilities with state-of-the-art hitting bays that provide tools the program has not yet had at its disposal.
