UNT Men of Color Cohorts

The statistics surrounding the persistence and graduation rates of men of color show an increased need to close the gap in support that these students face. The University of North Texas Multicultural Center is doing this by providing culturally-relevant resources, networks and community to help students of color who identify as male and masculine of center reach their educational and personal goals in innovative ways.

The Multicultural Center is excited to announce that we are launching our Men of Color Cohort Program this fall! The Cohorts will meet bi-weekly and provide programs, development and experiences that empower freshman male students of color as a means to support and increase retention, persistence and graduation rates while enhancing the collegiate educational experience. Participants in the program will self-select into race-based cohorts and participate in a rigorous educational experience that will blend formal learning, co-curricular involvement and resource building.

The Cohorts will focus on the following objectives:

  1. Academic Achievement and Support
  2. Cultural Appreciation
  3. Leadership,  Personal, and Professional Development
  4. Maleness and Healthy Masculinity
  5. Mentorship and Service

Additionally, the Men of Color Cohort Program will consist of the following:

  • Bi-weekly meetings that will dig into identity development and awareness, personal achievement and goals, and gender and cultural issues
  • Monthly one-on-one meetings
  • Service projects
  • Mentorship interactions
  • Exposure to academic, campus and financial resources

To participate in the Men of Color Cohorts this fall, join us on the following dates (spring dates to follow):

  • November 2 – Willis 340
  • November 16 – Willis 340
  • November 30 – Willis 340

Fem Flicks

About Fem Flicks
Fem Flicks is a free film series and a collaboration between the Multicultural Center, the Media Library, and the Women’s and Gender Studies Program. Films are generally shown at least once a month during each academic semester.

What is Fem Flicks?
Fem Flicks is a free film series that explores how gender identities intersect with race/ethnicity, disability, sexuality, etc. A post discussion follows the film and is led by a member of UNT’s faculty or Denton community member. Fem Flicks is designed to provide information and educational opportunities about diversity and inclusion to the UNT community. Past films have included: Braveheart: The Lizzie Velazquez, No Mas Bebes, India’s Daughter, and much more!

Who can participate?
Anyone in the UNT Community!

Clothesline Project

About the Clothesline Project
The Clothesline Project is a program started on Cape Cod, MA, in 1990 to address the issue of violence against women. It is a vehicle for women affected by violence to express their emotions. The Clothesline Project takes place multiple times during October, which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and April, which is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

What is the Clothesline Project?
Students and community members are able to create a shirt that allows each survivor, friends, or family members to tell their own story. It allows those who are still suffering in silence to understand that they are not alone. After you create a shirt, you are able to take that shirt with you or hang it on our clothesline.

Who can participate?
Anyone in the UNT or Denton Community.
