Incoming Texas House Democrat Michelle Beckley accused of racist comments
Michelle Beckley, the Texas House District 65 representative-elect, has been accused of making racist comments during her campaign for office.
The allegations surfaced after the Young Democrats of Denton County published a Facebook post last Friday condemning comments Beckley allegedly made towards people of color, although they did not disclose the specific comments in question.
“State Representative-elect Michelle Beckley has repeatedly made offensive, uncouth comments targeting people of color and allies in our county and her district,” the Young Democrats statement said. “Mrs. Beckley specifically targeted young Democrats of color in her district and attempted to sabotage two young democratic candidates of color.”
Multiple anonymous sources have presented allegations of racist conduct against Beckley to the Denton County Democratic Party, which is conducting an investigative review of the representative.
Beckley drew suspicion from some members in the group after comments she reportedly made at a Young Democrats of Denton County event, claiming the only Spanish words she knew “tacos and burritos.”
In addition to allegations of racist statements, some Denton County Democrats accuse Beckley of not handing out campaign literature for Democrat candidates of color during her campaign activities.
According to an article from the Lewisville Texan Journal, Denton County Democrats president Angie Cadena admitted to knowing about the allegations during Beckley’s campaign, but was asked by two other Denton County campaigns not to reveal the allegations publicly.
“It wasn’t my decision to not make it public,” Cadena told The Lewisville Texan Journal. “I’m still respecting their requests. The people who were complaining — it was going to impact their lives. It impacts the candidates.”
Other local party groups released statements concerning the accusations against Beckley, including the Denton County Young Republicans, who say they support the investigation into Beckley’s conduct.
“Unity in condemnation of terrible principles is something we should all hold dear,” the Young Republicans statement said. “We hope to elect responsible leaders in the future, with the interests of all Texans regardless of background or color.”
Beckley denied the accusations in a statement published in the Denton Record-Chronicle, saying the attacks against her are “without merit and unsupported by facts.”
On election night, Beckley unseated incumbent Republican Ron Simmons for the Carrollton Texas House seat by a margin of around 1,300 votes. She will assume office on Jan. 8, 2019.
