Project Abstract

Scientists at the Sea Education Association (SEA) and Helix Science, LLC conducted experiments that addressed fundamental questions about the ability of zooplankton to ingest microplastic particles. Experiments investigated selective grazing by a copepod species when phytoplankton (natural prey) and microplastics were present together, and noted changes in selective grazing with microplastics that were dosed with selected persistent, bioaccumulative, toxic (PBT) chemicals. In addition, researchers investigated whether particle weathering altered the sorption of PBT chemicals to microplastic particles. This project engaged students participating in educational programs at SEA.
