Academic Programs: Educational Opportunities and Internships

The Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) of NOAA Fisheries Service encourages participation in its research and education activities by students from diverse backgrounds and experiences. Opportunities to gain first-hand knowledge about fisheries science are available to high school and college students through a number of programs.

Atlantic Salmon Ecosystems Research Team Interships

The Atlantic Salmon Ecosystems Research Team (ASERT), in conjunction with the University of Maine in Orono, offers internships though an agreement with the College of Natural Sciences, Forestry and Agriculture. These paid internship opportunities, range from 10 to 40 hours per week, and are available during both the academic year and summer months. They are open to all undergraduate students for work on the U Maine Campus, at the Maine Field Station, or during the summer months in Woods Hole or other NEFSC location. The program involves students in a variety of research projects, all of which are related to the diadromous fish community, including such iconic species as Atlantic salmon, and the ecosystem that supports them, which links Maine’s rivers with the Gulf of Maine. Woods Hole Partnership Education Program (PEP)

The Woods Hole Partnership Educational Program (PEP) is designed primarily for college students (second semester sophomores, juniors, or seniors) who want to spend a summer gaining practical experience in marine and environmental science. The program consists of a four-week course in the sea-side village of Woods Hole and a research project. Learn more »

Woods Hole Science Aquarium High School Intern Programs

The Woods Hole Science Aquarium (WHSA) offers two summer programs for students who have completed grades 10, 11, or 12. Both programs are run by the WHSA staff, and are projects of the Northeast Fisheries Science Center of NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service and the Marine Biological Laboratory. The first is a five-week program working in the aquarium, helping to lead public collecting walks, and participating in the Careers in Marine Science Seminar. The second is a two-week Careers in Marine Science Seminar consisting of short presentations by marine scientists, activities, and field trips that introduce students to marine-related careers. Careers in Fishery Science

NOAA Fisheries Office of Science & Technology's education and outreach efforts are directed at a wide range of audiences that include K-12, undergraduate and graduate students, the general public, and international fisheries communities. Many of these efforts focus on building capacity and increasing diversity in NOAA Fisheries' science workforce, particularly in the fields of stock assessment, ecosystem assessment, and marine resource economics.
