#ThisJustIn - A Coast Guard Cutter Douglas Munro small-boat crew rescued four kayakers in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, Alaska, Sunday. The kayakers activated a personal locator beacon after one of the kayaks overturned. The Douglas Munro small-boat crew transferred the kayakers to the cutter to be medically assessed. The cutter crew transported the kayakers to Juneau, Monday, after no medical concerns were found. A U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Sitka MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew assisted the Alaska National Parks Service in rescuing two hikers in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, Alaska, yesterday. The crew hoisted the hikers, one suffering from a leg injury, and transported them to awaiting EMS in Sitka.

Today, the crew formerly assigned to the Coast Guard Cutter Maple became one of the few crews to have circumnavigated North America after taking the Maple via the Northwest Passage to the Coast Guard Yard in #Baltimore, #Maryland, and returning aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Kukui via the #Panama Canal. After a year-long overhaul, the cutter Kukui, previously homeported in Honolulu, Hawaii, takes the place of the cutter Maple in #Sitka, #Alaska.

#ICYMI On Tuesday, Coast Guard Aids to Navigation Team Kodiak boatcrew members conducted drop training with a U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak HC-130 Hercules aircrew in #Kodiak, #Alaska. Drop training is conducted for a number of reasons, one being to simulate dropping supplies to survivors in an actual rescue. The Coast Guard is replacing its 25-foot Response Boat —Small fleet with upgraded models to provide stations with high-speed, easily deployable platforms needed to execute a full range of Coast Guard missions close to shore. Yesterday, a boat crew from Coast Guard Station #Juneau, #Alaska, tested the capabilities of their newest asset, the 29-foot Response Boat — Small II. The RB-S II was designed with an increased emphasis on ergonomics and crew comfort.

Welcome to the Seventeenth Coast Guard District

Mission:

We serve and safeguard the public, protect the environment and its resources, and defend the Nation’s interests in the Alaskan maritime region.  


During an average month, in the 17th District, the Coast Guard;

Saves 22 lives; assists 53 people; reports and investigates 25 marine casualties; performs 74 living marine resource boardings; responds to 22 pollution incidents; services 93 buoys and fixed aids to navigation; conducts 13 security boardings and 22 security patrols; performs 143 commercial fishing vessel safety exams; saves over $1.65 million in property; teaches 375 kids about life jacket wear; and performs 95 marine inspections.


Area of Responsibility

The 17th District encompasses over 3,853,500 sq. miles and over 47,300 miles of shoreline throughout Alaska and the Arctic.
