Alaska Sea Grant State Graduate Fellowship Program

Alaska

The Alaska Sea Grant State Fellowship Program provides a unique professional opportunity for soon-to-graduate or recently finished graduate students interested in science and policy. Modeled after the national Knauss fellowship, the state fellowship program provides an opportunity to acquire on-the-job experience in planning and implementation of marine resource policies and programs in Alaska. The program matches highly motivated graduate students and recent graduates with hosts in Alaska-based state or federal agencies for a 12-month paid fellowship.

California Sea Grant State Graduate Fellowship Program

California

Current or recent graduate students in a marine or coastal-related field at a California university may apply. Applicants should communicate their interest and experience in either marine/coastal science and/or public policy.

Delta Science Graduate/Post-Doctoral  Fellowship

California

The Delta Science Fellows Program was established to connect graduate students and postdoctoral researchers with Bay-Delta agency scientists and senior research mentors. Fellows work on collaborative data analysis and research projects applicable to the California Bay-Delta system. The fellowship will provide up to two years of support based on scope/type of projects and contingent upon the availability of funds.

Coastal Management Graduate Fellowship

Federal

The Coastal Management Fellowship was established to provide on-the-job education and training opportunities in coastal resource management and policy for postgraduate students. The program matches students with state coastal zone programs to work on projects proposed by the state. This two-year opportunity offers a competitive salary, medical benefits and travel and relocation expense reimbursement.

Great Lakes Commission/Sea Grant Graduate Fellowship

Federal

One fellow will work for one year with members of Great Lakes science policy and information/education communities to advance the environmental quality and sustainable economic development goals of the Great Lakes states. The fellowship is located at the Great Lakes Commission office in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Florida Sea Grant Nutrient Dynamics Graduate Fellowship

Florida

The fellowship provides each of two University of Florida graduate students with $9500 per year for two years to conduct research to better understand how rates of nutrient input influence the structure and function of Florida coastal aquatic ecosystems.

UOG Sea Grant Graduate Fellowship

Guam

The University of Guam Sea Grant Program will award Master’s Thesis Supplemental Grants in selected areas of Coastal Community Development. These grants provide partial support (up to $12,000) for graduate student research activities with relevance to sustainable coastal development. Allowed are costs for Master’s Candidate stipends, participation in scientific meetings, conducting research in specialized facilities or field settings, and support or expansion of an existing body of Thesis research. Awardees must participate in UOG SG-led outreach education training offered every January.

Peter J. Rappa Sustainable Coastal Development Graduate Fellowship

Hawai'i

The Sustainable Coastal Development (SCD) Fellow will be involved in aspects of coastal sustainability and resilience and work with the Hawai'i Sea Grant Centers of Excellence. The Fellow will work to bring attention to sustainable coastal development through research, extension and community-based education in topics of coastal smart growth and community planning and their integration with hazard mitigation and climate change adaptation.

Maryland Sea Grant Graduate Research Fellowships

Maryland

Maryland Sea Grant invites researchers who have already received notice of a pending award from the program to apply for funding to support a graduate student as a Research Fellow. Students cannot apply directly to Maryland Sea Grant for a Research Fellowship; interested candidates should contact a principal investigator with whom they wish to study. The application process begins in October of odd years (e.g., 2019) to support Research Fellows beginning February 1 of the following, even year (e.g., 2020).

Coastal Resilience and Sustainability Research Graduate Fellowship

Maryland

Maryland Sea Grant supports graduate students to conduct research that furthers understanding of the coastal resilience and sustainability challenges faced in Maryland’s Chesapeake and coastal regions. For purposes of this fellowship, coastal community resilience and sustainability research may include, but is not limited to, use of water resources, climate change adaptation, coastal processes studies, resilience to natural hazards and resilient coastal businesses and industries, including fisheries and tourism.

Great Lakes Summer Fellows Program  

Michigan

This fellowship program provides students with an opportunity to conduct research in the Great Lakes region under the mentorship of an individual scientist or professional. Summer fellowships are available in a broad range of fields including Aquatic Ecology, Outreach and Education, Data Analysis, Fisheries and Oceanography.

Michigan Sea Grant Extension Graduate Fellows Program

Michigan

The Michigan Sea Grant Extension Fellows Program is designed for Michigan State University master’s or doctoral students interested in research and extension within the Great Lakes Region. The program will enable graduate students interested in community-engaged scholarship and outreach relating to global freshwater fisheries, food security, water quality and Great Lakes commerce and transportation.

Coastal Research Graduate Fellowship

North Carolina

This fellowship is supported by North Carolina Sea Grant and the N.C. Coastal Reserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve Program. It is designed to foster research within the North Carolina Coastal Reserve system. Proposed work must be conducted within the boundaries of one or more of the 10 sites in the NCCR.

Coastal Policy GraduateFellowship

North Carolina

This semester-long fellowship is designed to support research addressing a coastal policy issue within the state’s 20 coastal counties. Research and scholarly work conducted under this fellowship should include exploration of the topic's legal implications.

North Carolina Sea Grant/APNEP Joint Graduate Fellowship

North Carolina

This fellowship is supported by North Carolina Sea Grant and the Albemarle-Pamlico National Estuary Partnership (APNEP). The opportunity provides funding for graduate students based in North Carolina and Virginia to conduct applied research within the North Carolina portion of the APNEP management boundary.

North Carolina Sea Grant/North Carolina Space Grant Graduate Research Fellowship

North Carolina Space Grant Consortium and North Carolina Sea Grant offer a graduate research fellowship focused on nearshore environments and coastal watersheds. Proposed projects should apply relevant measurement instruments and/or remote-sensing data sources from NASA, NOAA or other data sources.

Oregon Sea Grant Legislative Graduate Fellowship

Oregon

Oregon Sea Grant will sponsor a State Legislative Fellowship during each Oregon Legislative Session for a graduate student with an interest in marine and coastal issues.

Oregon Natural Resource Policy Graduate Fellowship

Oregon

This fellowship is intended to give a student first-hand experience in natural resource policy at the state level. In so doing, the student will contribute to policies that will benefit natural resource managers, stakeholders, and user groups.

Master of Environmental Science and Management Graduate Fellowship

Rhode Island

Rhode Island Sea Grant supports two students for the academic year from the Master of Environmental Science and Management (MESM) program at the University of Rhode Island to work with scientists in developing solutions to the pressing problems facing coastal and marine communities. Fellows are assigned to a Sea Grant mentor who directs their work.

Kathryn D. Sullivan Earth and Marine Science Graduate Fellowship

South Carolina

The Kathryn D. Sullivan Earth and Marine Science Fellowship is designed to increase the number of highly trained earth and marine scientists and enable graduate students to conduct NASA-related Earth/marine science research.

Virginia Sea Grant Graduate Research Graduate Fellowship

This fellowship supports graduate students engaged in coastal and marine research relevant to Virginia and the VASG strategic plan. Fellows work with an outreach or end-user mentor to ensure that their research results are useful and used by stakeholders.

Commonwealth Coastal & Marine Policy Graduate Fellowship

Virginia

Modeled after the national Knauss fellowship, the goal of this fellowship is to develop and support exceptional postgraduates by partnering them with a host mentor where they receive on-the-job training and hone their professional skills, while improving the stewardship of coastal and marine resources.

Coastal Resilience Post-Graduate Fellowship

Virginia

This year-long paid fellowship is intended to provide educational and professional development opportunities for post-graduates interested in becoming leaders in innovative, pre-disaster, resiliency design strategies.

Washington State Sea Grant Graduate Fellowship

Washington

This program places four to five graduate students or recent graduates for one year with host offices to work on ocean and coastal science and management issues. The fellowship offers a first-hand experience in crafting marine and natural resource policies and enables fellows to share their academic expertise with state decision makers.

Washington Sea Grant Science Communications Fellowship

Washington

Washington Sea Grant Science Communications Fellows work for two academic quarters on a range of communications projects, from writing pieces for Washington Sea Grant's Sea Star newsletter to developing web content. The fellows share marine knowledge with Sea Grant's many audiences and build portfolios that help them gain recognition as writers and communicators who break down barriers between scientific information and public understanding.

J. Philip Keillor Wisconsin Coastal Management Graduate Sea Grant Fellowship

Wisconsin

Wisconsin Sea Grant and the Wisconsin Coastal Management Program fund this science-policy fellowship for candidates interested in tackling challenges related to coastal community resilience across the Great Lakes region. It places a recent master’s or doctoral graduate within a state agency full-time for one year with the fellow receiving valuable real-world science-policy experience from the resource professionals who serve as mentors.
