NOAA describes and predicts changes in the Earth's environment to conserve and wisely manage the coastal and marine resources of the United States. To accomplish this mission, NOAA operates the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI).

NCEI is responsible for hosting and providing access to one of the most significant archives on Earth, with comprehensive oceanic, atmospheric, and geophysical data. From the depths of the ocean to the surface of the sun and from million-year-old sediment records to near real-time satellite images, NCEI is the Nation's leading authority for environmental information.

As a focal point for coastal data, NCEI Stennis activities span across NOAA's long-term goals and across NOAA's Line offices. These activities are effectively managed as projects and programs but are designed to be longstanding as an inherent element of scientific stewardship.
