Sharing Ocean Exploration Data

Drawing upon years of experience managing the NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research (OER) expedition data, and employing expertise from across the agency, OER's data management practices deliver rapid and unrestricted data access, facilitate efficient and effective long-term data preservation, support resource management decisions, and inspire further exploration and research.

Data collections typically include oceanographic and geophysical parameters, video, images, documents, and other information, provided in a range of data formats. Data collection methods and processing steps are fully documented and published for easy data discovery and access and to ensure long-term data stewardship. Information collected aboard NOAA's exploration flagship vessel, the Okeanos Explorer , is publicly available within 60-90 days after the end of a mission. The OER Data Management Team has developed best practices and tools for the Okeanos Explorer data management that can be applied to all expeditions so that the data are made available to the public as soon as possible. Timelines for data release from other types of OER-sponsored expeditions will vary to meet the needs of exploration partners.
