Cox Named Second-Team All-C-USA

April 27, 2018

IRVING – Sophomore Lauren Cox concluded her sophomore season with a strong showing at the Conference USA Championships and was rewarded with second-team all-conference honors Friday. Spots on the all-conference teams were voted on by the league’s head coaches.

Cox becomes the second player in two seasons under head coach Michael Akers to be named to an all-conference team after Sol Lee was a third-team performer in 2016-17. Cox marks just the third Mean Green golfer to earn all-conference recognition since North Texas’ move to C-USA in 2013-14.

“I am very excited for Lauren Cox and her selection to the All-CUSA team,” Akers said. “Lauren is a very hard-worker and a great person. This honor could not have happened to a more deserving student-athlete. The progress Lauren has made on the golf course over past two years is incredible. I believe recruits are taking note and seeing that golfers can grow and improve in the positive and supportive environment we provide. Lauren has a bright future as well as our program.”

The Orange, Texas, native led the Mean Green in 2017-18 in scoring average, carding an average of 75.18, a marked improvement from her 2016-17 season (76.8). She had four top-20 finishes, a pair of which were in the top-10, including a tie for fifth at the Conference USA Championships, where she earned all-tournament team recognition. Cox also had the best individual round of the season for UNT, posting a career-low 67 at the Johnie Imes Invitational in the fall.

“I’m very honored to be named second team all-Conference USA,” Cox said. “This is a great accomplishment and I’m looking forward to all of the great things that are in store for our team next year.”

The Mean Green are positioned well to continue their ascension as a program heading into 2018-19. They will return four of five members that were in the lineup in every tournament this past season and also add freshman Patricia Sinolungan in the fall.
