Track & Field Earns 14 Podium Finishes At UTA Invitational

ARLINGTON – The North Texas track and field teams continue their fast start to the outdoor season by earning 14 podium finishes in the two-day meet concluding on Saturday at UT Arlington.

The Mean Green ended the Bobby Lane Invitational with six first-place finishes and eight podium finishes.

"It is going to take some time for the youngsters to put things together," head coach Carl Sheffield said. "They are a talented group and it is going to be exciting. We talk to them about the process and it is starting to pay off."

On Friday, Sophomore Kristyn Archuleta took home first place in javelin for the second-straight week with a mark of 42.28 meters (138-08 feet). Sophomore Karl Sralla also finished first in javelin with a throw of 55.44 meters (181-11 feet).

On the final day, sophomore Bailey Ashmore came in third in pole vault at 3.75 meters (12-3.50 feet). Sralla finished fourth in discus with a throw of 49.32 meters (161-10 feet).

In long jump, senior Dominique Drayden set a new personal-best mark of 7.23 meters (23-8.75 feet).

Freshman Amber Walker tied for first in high jump with three other competitors at 1.68 meters (5-6.00 feet). Junior Jourden Taylor finished second in high jump at 2.00 meters (6-6.75 feet)

Freshman Haley Walker placed second in shot put with a personal-best throw of 13.66 meters (44-9.75 feet). Freshman Jaleisa Shaffer was fourth in shot put with a personal-best throw of 13.63 meters (44-8.75 feet). Shaffer came in fifth in discus with a throw of 39.42 meters (129-04 feet) and Walker finished seventh at 37.36 meters (122-07 feet).

Sophomore Tim Jones ran a personal-best time of 3:57.26 to finish second in the 1500-meter run. Freshman Shane Bracken was sixth with a time of 3:59.52.

In the 800-meter run, Baylee Nelson came in third with a time of 2:16.37, senior Victoria Junious was fourth at 2:17.34 and Darrian Johnson finished fifth at 2:17.83.

Junior Cassidy Adams finished first in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a personal-best time of 11:36.97 and Jennifer White was second at 11:55.15.

In the 4x100-meter relay, the women’s team came in second as Taylor Blackshire, Bria Williams, Lyric Choice and Valencia Bullock clocked in at 46.09.

Blackshire finished second in the 100-meter dash at 11.86 and Williams was fifth with a time of 11.92. In the 200-meter dash, freshman Aneesa Scott took home first place with a time of 24.22, which is fourth-best in Conference USA.

In the final relay, the women’s 4x400-meter relay team finished third as Artesha Richardson, Scott, Brittni Emanuel and Junious.

"The upperclassmen are rounding into shapre and the hard work of their efforts are being witnessed by the younger athletes," Sheffield said. "We are really looking forward to this next training cycle. The level of upcoming competition should prepare us for our championship season in May."
