Lynch, Ashmore Earn Podium Finishes At C-USA Indoors

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Led by Susannah Lynch and Bailey Ashmore's third-place finishes, the North Texas track and field teams completed the two-day Conference USA indoor championships Sunday at CrossPlex.

The men's team earned 28 points to finish ninth and the women's team picked up 31.50 points to come in ninth.

"We always want to do well as a team," head coach Carl Sheffield said. "It was a good meet for our young people to experience Conference USA. I feel like the talent is there and it's going to take a minute for them to catch up to the intensity of the conference competition."

Lynch qualified in the mile with a time of 4:57.19 and junior Rea Iseli also qualified in the mile with a time of 5:01.05. Lynch took third in the mile with a time of 4:54.38 and Iseli was fourth by setting another personal-best time of 4:57.04.

Sophomore Bailey Ashmore finished third in pole vault at 3.70 meters (12-1.50 feet). Junior Baylee Nelson qualified for the 800-meter run finals after running a career-best time of 2:12.46. Nelson was fourth in the finals at 2:12.61.

In the men's 60-meter dash, freshman Darien Porter qualified for the finals with a personal-best time of 6.79. Porter ran a personal-best time of 21.75 in the 200-meter dash but missed out on qualifying for the finals. Porter came in sixth in the 60m dash finals with a time of 6.82.

Senior Mike Lowe took fourth in the 5000-meter run with a time of 14:34.77 to earn five points for the men's team. Freshman Florian Lussy was fifth with a time of 14:37.09 to pick up four points.

In the 60-meter hurdles, graduate student Jaron Thomas ran a season-best time of 8.06 to qualify for the finals. Thomas finished eighth in the 60m hurdles finals at 8.54.

The women's distance medley relay team finished sixth as Nelson, Iseli, Darrian Johnson and Victoria Junious finished with a personal-best time of 11:59.98. The men's distance medley relay team came in fourth as Zach Kirkland, Tim Jones, Thomas and Bracken ran a personal-best time of 10:05.49.

In the women's 3000-meter run, Lynch took fourth coming just short of a podium finish with a personal-best time of 9:39.85. On the men's side, Lowe came in fifth with a time of 8:22.04 and freshman Florian Lussy was eighth with a personal-best time of 8:25.39.

In the final event, North Texas came in 11th in the women's 4x400-meter relay and sixth in the men's.

"We had some outstanding individual performances," Sheffield said. "The team realizes that we were not pleased with the overall results but they can be better by the time the outdoor championships come around. They will be better prepared because that is what they're used to."
