Track & Field Begins Final Tune-Up At Bobcat Classic

DENTON – The North Texas track and field teams will look to secure final spots for the 2018 Conference USA Championships by competing at the Bobcat Classic this weekend on April 27-28.

On Friday, April 27, the meet will begin with women’s hammer at 1 p.m. and men’s hammer at 3 p.m. Other field events on day one will be pole vault, long jump, and javelin. The men’s and women’s 3000-meter steeplechase will conclude the first day at 9 p.m.

Freshman Matthew Morgan is ranked 13th in the steeplechase and junior Cassidy Adams is fifth entering the weekend. Junior Javier Lopez-Ibarra sits second in javelin after his school record mark of 66.55 meters was set at the TCU Invitational. Sophomore Kristyn Archuleta also is second after throwing a career-best throw of 51.51 meters at the Beach Invitational last weekend.

Senior Dominique Drayden will compete in the long jump (ninth) and triple jump (12th) on day one. Sophomore Breanna Eckels is rounding into form after a career-best jump of 6.28 meters last week at the Beach Invitational, which puts her second in C-USA.

On Saturday, April 28, the field events will kick things off with discus and high jump starting at 11 a.m. The meet will conclude with the 4x400-meter relay at 6:20.

The men’s 4x100-meter relay team is fourth in C-USA with a time of 40.53 that was set at the Mt. SAC Relays last weekend. The women’s 4x100-meter relay team (Taylor Blackshire, Bria Williams, Eckels, Aneesa Scott) is second at 45.29 that was run at the Beach Invitational last weekend. Freshman Darien Porter, junior James Cole, senior Alford Tribble and freshman Abdon Campbell will compete in the 4x100-meter relay at the Bobcat Classic.

Sophomore Bailey Ashmore is second in pole vault at 3.96 meters, which is a school record that was set at the TCU Invitational. Ashmore will compete at the Bobcat Classic on Friday, April 27.

The Mean Green will compete against Texas State, TAMU-Kingsville, Incarnate Word, Texas Wesleyan, TAMU-Commerce, UTSA, SMU and New Mexico.
