Math Placement Exam

Undergraduate students have the option of taking a math placement exam to determine math placement. You may want to review the math placement sequence or meet with your academic advisor to determine which math class is right for your major.

The 20-question Accuplacer mathematics placement examination, "College Level Mathematics," is a computerized assessment of mathematical skills. This test measures skill proficiency from intermediate algebra through pre-calculus. Students cannot "pass" or "fail" the  placement test, but it is very important that students do their very best so that an accurate measure of mathematics academic skills is obtained.

  • Test Information – There is no cost to take the initial Math PlacementExam.  The cost to re-take the exam is $5.00 and should be paid by check or money order (payable to UNT Dallas). An appointment is required to take the exam. Please contact Academic Support at 972-338-1769, or 972-338-1761 to schedule an appointment. Students may take the placement exam no more than twice for the targeted semester of enrollment.
  • Test Preparation – Students are encouraged to prepare for the math placement exam.  The exam will cover the following content areas:
    • Algebraic operations.  Includes simplifying rational algebraic expressions factoring, expanding polynomials, and manipulating roots and exponents.
    • Solutions of equations and inequalities.  Includes the solution of linear and quadratic equations and inequalities, equation systems, and other algebraic equations.
    • Coordinate geometry.  Includes plane geometry, the coordinate plane, straight lines, conics, sets of points in the plane, and graphs of algebraic functions.
    • Applications and other algebra topics.  Includes complex numbers, series and sequences, determinants, permutations and combinations, fractions, and word problems.
    • Functions and trigonometry.  Includes polynomial, algebraic, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions.
