DENTON – The North Texas men’s and women’s cross country teams will participate in the 2017 Conference USA championships hosted by Southern Miss on Saturday, Oct. 28, at 9 a.m.

The championship event will be run on the Choctaw trails in Clinton, Mississippi. The men’s 8k will start at 9 a.m. followed by the women’s 5k at 10 a.m.

“After a long build up period, we had a nice training block with the women this last month,” cross country coach Kevin Williams said. “We were able to rest a few athletes and get them healthy and have a number of athletes that are in great shape. On the men's side, the team reset their focus after a disappointing Pre-Nationals meet. We are traveling a small squad, so every person matters and will be relied upon.”

The men’s team will have six competitors in seniors Mike Lowe, Rick Nally, Zach Kirkland, freshman Jack Beaumont, redshirt sophomore Alex Cleveland and sophomore Tim Jones.

In last year’s C-USA championship, Lowe finished 19th earning all-conference honors. Cleveland (22nd), Nally (37th), Kirkland (30th) and Jones (39th) all have experience running championship meets.

The women’s squad will be bringing nine runners in juniors Susannah Lynch, Rea Iseli, Baylee Nelson, senior Christina Moralez, sophomore Cassidy Adams, senior Victoria Junious, freshmen Olivia Zint, Eva Mora and sophomore Jennifer White.

“Susannah had a great race here last year finishing fourth overall,” Williams said. All top four runners return from last year and are running well so it will be a big test to see how many of them she can beat this year for round two. Susannah had a great summer and has been very consistent with her training, so there is a lot working in her favor.”

Along with Lynch earning all-conference last season, Moralez came in 19th to land on the third-team. Adams (52nd), Nelson (72nd), White (82nd) will be competing in their second C-USA championship.

“I am very excited to be coaching in my first C-USA championship,” Williams added. “Over the last few years the level of competition in the conference has grown and will continue to elevate. This is our first opportunity to fight for our position within the conference.”
