Track and Field Gears Up For NCAA Midwest Regional

DENTON - The North Texas men’s and women’s track and field teams are preparing for the NCAA Midwest Regional May 28-29 in College Station, Tex. North Texas will have 15 athletes competing in 11 different events for a berth in the NCAA Championship.

On the men’s side North Texas will have three athletes competing along with the 4x400 relay team. Junior Jarrod Stone will compete in both the high jump and the long jump. Stone’s season best mark in the long jump was 7.49m at the Texas Relays, the 12th best in the Midwest Region this season. Stone also has a mark of 2.10m in the high jump. In the other field events Chris Mordecai advanced to the regional by winning the pole vault in the Sun Belt Conference Championship by clearing a height of 15-11.

Two-sport star Adrian Awasom had a personal best throw in the discus at 170-3 in the conference championship to qualify for the regional for the first time in his career. The Mean Green will be sending the 4x400 relay team of David Turner, Derek Logan, Arthur Cox, and Andre Douglas after a sensational come from behind victory over Middle Tennessee at the conference championship to win the 4x400 relay. North Texas also ran a season-best time of 3:10.43 in the race to qualify for the regional.

The North Texas women will be sending five athletes along with the 4x100 relay team to the regional this season. Ciji Brooks and Osaze Aghedo will be the only athletes to compete in two events on the women’s side this season. Brooks won the shot put and the 100-meter hurdles at the conference championship. Brooks set a new school record in the shot put with a toss of 46-6.25. She also had a personal and season best time in the hurdles at 13.91, which is the second best time in school history.

Sophomore Deidra Wesley will be competing in the regional for a second straight season in the high jump after clearing 5-8 on numerous times this season. Wesley will be eyeing the school record at the regional meet which is 5-8.75. Joining Wesley in the high jump will be freshman Ryan Hill. She also cleared 5-8 and will also have her sights set on the school record. Both jumps of 5-8 are tied for the third best in school history.

Senior Jessica Henderson will make her second straight trip to the regional meet after winning the discus at the conference championship with a season-best throw of 159-10. Aghedo is competing in the 100-meter dash and she is a member of the 4x100 relay team.

Her time of 11.70 is a personal best and the second best time in school history. Aghedo is joined on the relay team by Chastidy Russell, Rhonda Williams, and Roniqua Wilson. North Texas won the 4x100 relay at the conference championship with a season-best time of 45.89.

The top five competitors from the meet along with the top three ranked athletes from competition during the season will advance to the NCAA Championship June 9-12 in Austin, Tex.
