North Texas Track & Field Heads To NCAA West Prelims

DENTON – Eight North Texas track and field athletes will compete at the 2016 NCAA West preliminaries held at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, Kan. May 26-28.

The Mean Green are hoping to return to the NCAA finals for the first time since 2014 when former North Texas sprinter Clinton Collins finished 15th in the 400-meter dash and earned All-American honors.

Chastity Stewart, who finished 24th in the 400-meter hurdles at the NCAA finals in 2014, has qualified in three events. Stewart will run in the first heat in the 100-meter hurdles at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 27 and is in the first heat in the 400m hurdles at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 26. The final event, Stewart will compete in the 4x100-meter relay with teammates Nadiyah El-Amin, Mona Landry and Siara Obasuyi on Saturday, May 28 at 6 p.m.

Landry is also competing in the long jump for the third time in her career on Thursday, May 26 at 6:45 p.m. and junior Jazmine Martin is participating in the triple jump for the second time and will be in the third flight on Saturday, May 28 at 6:30 p.m.

Junior Collin Heard is set to run the 200-meter dash for the third time in his career on Friday, May 27 at 8:25 p.m. Heard will be competing in the second heat and looking to qualify for finals for the first time. Senior Bryce McAndrew is running in the 1500-meter run for the first time at NCAA prelims and will be competing Thursday, May 26 at 6 p.m. Classmate Eddie Wilcox will be jumping in the high jump event on Saturday, May 28 at 5:30 p.m. looking to finish in the top-12 to move on to finals in Eugene.

The NCAA's West Region for track & field includes the 121 Division I schools located west of the Mississippi River. Athletes from those 121 institutions who rank among the top-48 in their respective events earn berths into the NCAA West Preliminary Round. The best 24 relay teams also advance to NCAA Prelims.

Over three days in Lawrence, those 48 athletes and 24 relays will compete in a 'bracket'-style format to qualify for the NCAA Championships to be held in Eugene, Oregon, June 8-11. The fields of the various events will be whittled down from 48 to 12 by the meet's end, with those 12 athletes or relays teams earning berths to the NCAA Championships, with the qualifiers from the East Preliminary (hosted in Jacksonville, Florida) completing the field to compete in Eugene.
