DENTON – Six North Texas track & field athletes will compete at the 2017 NCAA West preliminaries hosted by the University of Texas at Myers Stadium in Austin on May 25-27.

Qualifying individuals advance to the 2017 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, on June 7-10. Twelve competitors from each individual event will advance to the NCAA finals in Eugene.

Sophomore Javier Lopez-Ibarra qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary round after throwing a personal-best mark of 63.15 meters at the Bobcat Classic on April 29. Lopez-Ibarra will open the NCAA West prelims Thursday at 11 a.m. in the first flight.

Freshman standout Kristyn Archuleta, named Conference USA Freshman of the Year, qualified for the NCAA West prelims after breaking the school record with a first-place throw of 49.39 meters at the C-USA Outdoor Championships. Heard also qualified on April 29 at the Bobcat Classic with a season-best time of 20.86. He will compete Friday at 7:55 p.m. in the sixth and final heat.

Senior James Coleman qualified for the 3000-meter steeplechase after coming in third at the C-USA Outdoor Championships with a career-best time of 8:54.04. Coleman’s time was a new school record and he will compete Friday at 9 p.m. in the third heat.
