Tennis Goes Undefeated At North Texas Challenge

Day 1 Results 

 

DENTON, Texas - (b10/12/07) - The North Texas tennis team had a record of 6-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles at the North Texas Challenge and played strong at the Midland Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational.

 

Highlighted victories go to Shannon McKenzie who defeated both Desre’ Tan from Midwestern State University 6-1, 6-1 and Emily McRae from Collin County Community College 6-0, 6-0, bringing her overall individual record to 5-3.

 

Sammie Moreton starts the season strong with a record of 2-0 due to victories over both Ann-Sophie Indeherberge from Midwestern 6-2, 6-3 and Marie Liwuslili from Collin County Community College, 6-0, 6-3.

 

“Coach Lama and I are especially pleased with the four girls that played in the North Texas Challenge today. McKenzie, Moreton, Idalina Franca and Ashley Akin played excellent tennis and performed the way we expected them to perform in both doubles and singles. We did not lose a match and are proud that we won those matches with class and spirit,” said assistant coach Jeff Maren.

 

Tennis also received doubles victories from Franca and Moreton who defeated Danielle Cochran and Julya Noah from North Central Texas College, 8-0. Akin and McKenzie had an 8-3 victory over Melissa Silva and Tan from Midwestern.

 

The North Texas Challenge will continue 9 a.m. tomorrow at the Waranch Tennis Center.

 

Over at the Midland Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational, the Mean Green gave some of the nation's top competition a run for its money. Madura Rangathan and Amy Joubert beat the No. 30 ranked doubles team in the country, Laura Vallverdu and Michela Kissell of the University of Miami, 8-6, while Catalina Cruz and Rachel Wilhelm beat Clara Jagasova and Monika Nadvigerova from the University of Texas-Arlington, 8-2.

 

In singles action, Polina Kokoulina of Boise State scratched out a 7-5, 7-6 victory over Cruz, but Narine Kazarova landed a victory over Zuzana Chmelarova of Baylor University, 7-5, 4-6, and 7-6.

 

“This tournament gave us the opportunity to measure our players against some of the best in the country. We had success in both singles and doubles and it was really incredible to watch. They’re really ahead of schedule in their development,” said Coach Sujay Lama.
