Denton (9/22/06) -- The North Texas tennis team finishes day one of the North Texas Invitational 8-5.

 

The Mean Green started the day with two wins in the morning’s doubles matches. Idelina Franca and Megan Schmulbach defeated Tyler College and Aziza Aba Butain and Sammie Moreton defeated Arkansas State.

 

Franca led North Texas in her first competition at UNT, going undefeated in both singles and doubles play.

 

Schmulbach won her first round in flight green, defeating Rachel Anders from Tyler, but fell to UTA’s Peciulionyte in the second round.

 

Moreton had a win over NCTC’s Shanei Garcia in round one of flight two, but fell to SMU’s Georgiana Marta.

 

North Texas assistant coach Jeff Maren is pleased with the results from day one of the tournament.

 

"I am very pleased with the tournament," Maren said, "I am happy with how we played and the fact that the weather cooperated. The players all competed hard in both singles and doubles. The competition in every match was very good. I think this is a good sign for the future. We have a bright season to look forward to."

 

The North Texas Invitational starts back up tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m.
