Stockinger Reaches Finals At Mean Green Invitational

DENTON, Tex. (9/18/04) -- Junior Ingrid Stockinger led the North Texas women’s tennis team in the second day of play at the Mean Green Invitational, winning her flight-C semifinals match and a pair of flight-B doubles matches on Saturday to place her in two championship matches tomorrow at Goldfield Tennis Center.
Stockinger knocked off Tyler JC’s Dzeljan Memisi in three sets (4-6, 7-5, 6-3) to improve to 3-0 at the tournament and will now face McNeese State’s Madeleine Hakansson in the flight-C finals on Sunday. Stockinger and Katherine Harris defeated two teams from McNeese State and Louisiana-Lafayette, placing them in the flight-B championship against McNeese State’s Grobbelaar/Hakansson tomorrow.
Harris picked up the only other North Texas victory in singles play, defeating TCU’s Lindsay McBride in straight sets in the third round of the consolation bracket. Harris improved to 2-1 at the tournament and will play TJC’s Ame Blacketer in the consolation-bracket championship match on Sunday.
Megan Schmulbach, Ashley Sammis and Aziza Aba Butain all dropped their semifinals match in flights A, B and C, respectively, but will still compete in the third-place match for each flight tomorrow. The three players have combined to post a 4-3 record in the first two days of competition.
The final day of the Mean Green Invitational will begin Sunday at 9 a.m. with all singles matches and be followed by the doubles matches at 11:30 a.m.
