ORLANDO, Fla. (3/21/09) - North Texas tennis stayed on a roll Saturday defeating the UCF Knights 6-1 at the UCF Tennis Complex in Orlando. This marked the fifth straight victory for the Mean Green this year. In fact, the last time NT won five matches in a row was during the 1986-87 season.

"We got the job done in doubles and in singles we were lights out," said North Texas head coach Sujay Lama. "We played with a lot of energy and put together a complete match."

The Mean Green (12-5, 2-1) flexed its muscle once again as it won seven of the nine total matches versus the Knights (8-7, 1-0).

The pair of Ashley Akin and Rachel won a crucial match in doubles beating UCF's Christy Core and Katie Orletsky in a tiebreaker 9-8 (7-0). Catalina Cruz and Narine Kazarova also won 8-2 over Alexis Rodriguez and Andrea Yacaman.

In singles, the top four positions claimed victories for the Mean Green. Irina Paraschiv shook off her first set against Jenny Frisell to win 0-6, 6-3, 7-5 at the No. 1 spot. At No. 2, Madura Ranganthan handed Andrea Yacaman a loss in two sets 6-4, 6-3.

"After dropping the doubles match, I really wanted to win my match in singles," said Ranganathan. "I was focused and just played point-for-point. I thought my forehand was especially good today."

Catalina Cruz, Paula Dinuta, and Amy Joubert rounded out the singles victories for NT. Cruz looked sharp getting the W in straight sets over Elvira Serrot 7-5, 6-2. Dinuta won going away in her match blanking Alexis Rodriguez 6-0, 6-0 and Joubert picked up a hard-fought win in two tiebreakers 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (9-7).

As a side note, North Texas head coach Sujay Lama coached UCF's head coach Stephanie Nickitas during his three year stint at the University of Florida where the Gators won two national titles in the 90's.

Mean Green tennis gets some time off before taking to the court again on April 5 against the Rice Owls.
