Finish Strong

March 13, 2017

DENTON — The North Texas tennis team looks for a quick rebound win Tuesday versus Georgia State after losing on Sunday to Wichita State.

The Mean Green (5-9) host the Panthers (5-5) at 3:00 p.m. at the Waranch Tennis Complex.

“My goal for our team Tuesday is to finish strong,” said head coach Sujay Lama. “We have been so close in every match this season. The ones we’ve lost we didn’t finish as well as we could have.”

North Texas enters Tuesday’s match having lost five matches this season by one point. In their most recent match against Wichita State on Sunday, North Texas couldn’t close the deal after winning the doubles point and winning in singles at No. 1 and No. 2. They lost to the Shockers 4-3. The loss came just a couple days after having strong showings at No. 22 TCU and a dominating home win against Arizona on March 4.

Resiliency though has been a strength for the Mean Green. North Texas is 3-1 this year in matches that are the next day or two days following a loss.

“We’ve got to have the determination to finish matches every time we step on the court,” Lama said. “We’ve been resilient all year. So I expect that against Georgia State.”

Tuesday in doubles, North Texas sophomores Maria Kononova and Tamuna Kutubidze are going to attempt to remain undefeated and improve their doubles record to 11-0. The No. 77 ranked team in the country has had three unfinished matches this year. In two of the three matches the Mean Green pair led at the time the match was called.

Kononova and Kutubidze have also dominated this past week in singles. Both defeated formable TCU competitors and made quick work of their Wichita State opponent. The ITA ranks Kononova No. 82 in the country.
