S&D Earns CSCAA Scholar All-America Honors

DENTON, Texas (7/17/12)- Six North Texas swimming & diving athletes received individual scholar All-America honors by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America on Tuesday.

Seniors Becca Ploetz and Catia Weickgenant, junior Catherine Johnson and sophomores Mona Groteguth, Kimmy Phillips and Krista Rossum were each tabbed as an Honorable Mention Scholar All-America, which is given to an athlete by achieving an NCAA consideration standard or diving zone score and having a GPA over 3.5 during the season.

With a combined GPA of 3.32, the Mean Green was also named a CSCAA Scholar All-America team for the spring semester - a recognition that North Texas has achieved every semester under head coach Joe Dykstra. The team GPA is also the third-best among Texas schools.

"I am very proud of our team for yet again earning the recognition of a Scholar All-America Team from the CSCAA," said Dykstra. "We emphasize high achievement in the classroom and to continue to earn this recognition for our team each semester is very rewarding. I am especially proud of having six Honorable Mention Scholar All-Americans in one season for the first time ever. To see that some of our best swimmers and divers are also some of our best students is a real testament to their dedication and hard work."

Ploetz made the list after recording a 3.6 fall GPA and achieving an NCAA "B" cut in the 400 freestyle relay.

Weickgenant had a 3.75 fall GPA, a 3.61 spring GPA and achieved an NCAA "B" cut in the 500 freestyle, 200 fly, 400 freestyle relay, 800 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay.

Johnson made her mark with a 3.53 fall GPA and was an NCAA zone-diving competitor on the 1-meter and 3-meter events.

Groteguth, Phillips and Rossum all made NCAA "B" cuts as freshmen. Groteguth (3.8 fall GPA, 3.58 spring GPA) made cuts in 100 back, 200 back and 400 medley, Phillips (3.6 spring GPA) tallied a cut in the 800 freestyle relay, and Rossum (4.0 spring and fall GPA) shined with cuts in 200 IM, 100 breast, 200 breast, 400 freestyle relay, 800 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay.
