DENTON (9/29/07) - The North Texas softball team defeated Alvin, 3-1, at its North Texas Playday on Saturday at Lovelace Stadium.

The Mean Green continued its fall season on Saturday with an all-day tournament at its home stadium. North Texas lost its two night games to Cameron (3-2) and Oklahoma City (4-2).

Muller and Cantler led the offense for the Mean Green. The shortstop posted a homer, double and two singles in the three games, while the freshman first baseman recorded three doubles and knocked in two runs.

North Texas defeated Alvin, 3-1, in its opening game behind a solo home run Muller and two doubles by Cantler.

In the second game, Cameron came back to defeat North Texas, 3-2, after scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Mean Green took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning off a Cameron throwing error and an RBI single by Lauren Bergstrom. Cameron used a two-run homer to steal the win from the Mean Green.

In the final game of the tournament, North Texas was hurt by poor fielding and fell 4-2 to Oklahoma City. The Mean Green held an early 1-0 lead after Cantler posted her third double of the game, scoring freshman Mariza Martinez. After Oklahoma City scored three runs off errors, junior Sarah Jones cut into the lead with a solo home run in the third. Oklahoma City tacked on another run to stay ahead, 4-2.

Pitchers Ashley Lail, Jennifer Smith and Kristina Fowler saw action for the Mean Green. Smith pitched six scoreless innings against Cameron before giving up three runs in the seventh. She struck out seven batters. Lail pitched the first game and picked up the win after giving up just one run.

North Texas returns to action next weekend when it hosts the University Classic.
