Mean Green Softball Faces No. 4 FAU On Friday

Mobile, Ala. (5/14/10) - The North Texas softball team faces No. 4 FAU in day three action at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Friday, May 14 at 12:30 p.m. The winner of this game faces Troy at 5:30 p.m.

North Texas is 6-7 all-time in the series against FAU. The Mean Green went 1-2 in this season’s series against FAU. NT lost only two conference series this season, against FAU and ULL. FAU is the No. 4 seed in the tournament with a 12-10 conference mark.

The Mean Green has never gotten past day three at the conference tournament.  In 2007, North Texas won its third game on Friday but lost to ULM in the fourth game. NT has gone 2-2 in the conference tournament three times but only once since the conference expanded to nine teams.

With its win against FIU, North Texas secured its 28th win of the season. The 28 wins sets a school record. The 2008 team held the previous record of 27. The 2010 team has now secured the program’s first winning season, set a team record for wins in a season and home runs in a single season.

Rebecca Waters posted her sixth home run of the season against FIU on Thursday. It was the team’s 50th home run, setting a school record. The 2009 team held the previous record of 49.

Renae Bromley scored the game-winning run against FIU in the conference tournament off a wild pitch. That is not the first time that North Texas has won a game off a wild pitch. The Mean Green defeated No. 15 Texas, 1-0, on March 16, when Anna Barren scored off a wild pitch.

It was Lisa Johnson’s patience at the plate that contributed to NT scoring the second run against FIU. Johnson drew a walk and the wild pitch led a run to score. The sophomore has set the school record for walks in a season with 28 and is ranked nationally as one of the toughest players to strikeout.
