Softball Earns No. 7 Seed In Conference Tournament

DENTON (5/6/07) - The North Texas softball team earned a No. 7 seed in the 2007 Sun Belt Conference Tournament and will face the No. 2 seed, Louisiana-Lafayette, in its first-round game on Wednesday, May 9 at 12:30 pm in Murfreesboro, TN.

The Mean Green finished its regular season with an overall record of 21-34 and a conference record of 10-14. North Texas was swept for the first time this season in a conference series last weekend against Louisiana-Lafayette. The Ragin’ Cajuns hold a 16-0 series record against the Mean Green.

For the first time, this year’s conference championship will field an eight-team tournament. Three teams were added to the Sun Belt this season, making it a nine-team softball conference. Eight of the nine top teams make the double-elimination tournament. Newcomer Louisiana-Monroe (24-38, 4-20) finished ninth in the conference standings.

In its first year as a member of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, Florida Atlantic (36-22, 16-8) won the regular season championship with a three-game sweep against FIU (21-33, 9-14) this past weekend. The Owls will face the eighth-seeded Golden Panthers in their first game on Wednesday. Louisiana-Lafayette took the second seed after winning only two of its three games against Louisiana-Monroe this past weekend, and Troy fell to the third spot after losing two of three to South Alabama.

The Mean Green was idle this past weekend, while other conference teams finished up league play. NT is 3-0 in opening round conference tournament games, and 5-6 overall in the tournament in the last three years. NT is 0-2 against Louisiana-Lafayette in tournament play.

Middle Tennessee is hosting the 2007 Sun Belt Conference Championship in Murfreesboro, TN. The tournament will begin on Wednesday, May 9 and conclude with the chamipionship on Saturday, May 12.
