DENTON, Texas (3/15/08) The North Texas softball team swept South Alabama in doubleheader action on Saturday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium. The Mean Green won the first game, 6-5, and took the second game, 9-6.

 

The Mean Green improves to 11-15 and 4-1 in Sun Belt Conference action. The Jaguars fall to 10-13 and 0-2 in the conference. NT leads the series, 3-2, against the Jaguars.

 

Sarah Jones led the Mean Green with six RBI in the two games. She gave North Texas a 3-2 lead with an RBI double in the third inning of the second game. The junior recorded her second double of the game in the Mean Green’s six-run fourth inning. She knocked in three runs in the first game, including a solo home run.

 

Kristina Fowler picked up two wins after pitching relief in both games. The senior pitched a combined 10 innings and allowed just one run on eight hits. She struck out 10 batters.

 

Katya Muller, Mallory Cantler and Sarah Jones all posted multi-hit performances in both games. Fowler posted her second three-hit ball game of the season in the first game with a 3-for-4 outing.

 

The Mean Green needed nine innings in the first game, but came back from a 5-1 deficit to beat the Jaguars. North Texas used three home runs, a sacrifice fly and a hit by Fowler in the ninth inning to take the win.

 

The Mean Green put itself into a hole early in the first game. The Jags scored five runs, three of them unearned, off three Mean Green errors.

 

Rebecca Waters began the comeback with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the lead to 5-2. Muller, Mariza Martinez and Cantler all singled to load the bases for Jones who hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Muller.

 

Cantler and Jones hit back-to-back solo home runs in the seventh inning to tie the game at 5-5. It was Cantler’s third home run of the season and Jones’ second.

 

Fowler started the ninth inning off with a single and was advanced to third on two sacrifice bunts. Waters knocked home Fowler for the winning run with a grounder to second base. Fowler beat the throw home.

 

North Texas returns to action on Sunday, March 16 when it rounds out play against South Alabama at 1 pm.
