North Texas Softball Run-Rules Sam Houston

Houston, Texas (2/11/12) - Five runs in the fourth inning propelled the North Texas softball team to a 9-1 run-rule victory against Sam Houston State on Saturday at Cougar Stadium. The Mean Green lost its second game of the day, 7-5, against Texas A&M Corpus Christi in second-day action at the Houston Hilton Plaza Classic.

The Mean Green went 1-1 on day two and is now 1-2 on the season. North Texas improves to 3-7 in the series against Sam Houston (0-2) and falls to 4-4 against the Islanders (1-2).

After getting no-hit by Oklahoma State on Friday, the North Texas bats woke up on day two. The Mean Green offense posted 13 hits and knocked in seven runs in the five-inning run-rule game against Sam Houston. A five-run fourth inning put North Texas ahead, 7-1, and two unearned runs in the fifth sealed the victory.

A six-run fifth inning by the Islanders gave them a come-from-behind victory against North Texas in the late game. Behind home runs by Lisa Johnson and Maddelyn Fraley, North Texas took a 5-0 lead. Texas A&M CC scored a combined seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take the win.

Brittany Simmons picked up her first win of the season. She pitched five innings and allowed one earned run off four hits against the Bearkats. Lauren Poole lost her first game of the season. She held the Islanders scoreless through four innings of work before giving up six runs off five hits in the fifth inning.

In the opening win, Caitlin Grimes gave North Texas an early 1-0 lead when she led off the second inning with a solo home run. It was her first hit of the season and the 13th of her career.

After the Bearkats quickly tied the game in the top of the third with a home run of their own, Grimes posted her second RBI of the game in the bottom of the third with a groundout to the shortstop that brought the runner home from third. Lesley Hirsch scored after walking to get on base.

North Texas added to the lead with five runs in the fifth. Fraley and Danielle Hoff started the inning off with back-to-back singles. Megan Rupp walked to load the bases for Hirsch who brought home a run with a single. Johnson plated a second run with an infield groundout, and Brooke Foster cleared the bases a two-run double. Ashley McCarroll, starting her second game in right field, knocked in the fifth run of the inning with an RBI single.

Three Mean Green singles and two errors by Sam Houston led to two more runs in the fifth, ending the game.

The Islanders outhit the Mean Green, 9-6. North Texas scored five runs in the opening three innings off two home runs, an error and a wild pitch.

North Texas rounds out play in the Houston Hilton Plaza Classic on Sunday, Feb. 12 against No. 20 Houston at 11 a.m.
