North Texas Falls In Championship Game To Denver

LAFAYETTE, La. (11/4/06) - The North Texas women’s soccer team had its reign atop the Sun Belt Conference come to an end as the Denver Pioneers captured the Sun Belt Conference Tournament title with a 4-0 victory.  The Mean Green, who had won the previous two conference titles, finishes the regular season with 15 victories.

Denver (18-2-1) jumped on the Mean Green (15-5-2) early in the contest scoring just 91 seconds into the game. Llean Grimditch scored to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead. Denver extended its lead in the 35th minute of play when Jenna Billingsley scored on a penalty kick.

"The penalty kick right before the half to extend their lead really was a killer," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "It took the wind out of our sails and we were never really able to recover from that very questionable call".

Leading 2-0 at the break, Denver added to its lead early in the second half to put the game away. Taryn Hemmings scored in the 54th minute and then Billingsley added her second goal of the afternoon just two minutes later to make it 4-0 Denver.

The Mean Green was outshot by Denver 17-9 in the match.

"I knew coming in that winning three straight tournament titles would be very difficult and you have to give Denver credit, they have a great team" Hedlund said.

The trio of Kendall Juett, Brittany Cleveland, and Dani Slavonic were named to the All-Tournament team. Juett had two goals and five points in the tournament while Cleveland had three goals in the three games.

North Texas will have to wait until Monday to see if they can receive an at-large big to the NCAA tournament.
