Soccer Wins Second Straight Conference Game

MONROE, La. (9/23/12) - North Texas soccer won its second straight Sun Belt Conference game with a 2-1 victory over the ULM Warhawks on Sunday, September 23.

"I'm very happy with the two road wins this weekend," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "Obviously with us winning the league last year, we're going to get everyone's best and that is exactly what we saw from both Louisiana teams this weekend."

The Mean Green (7-3-1, 2-0-0) also took down the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns 2-0 on Friday to win the first two games of SBC play for the third time in four years.

North Texas junior defender Kelsey Hodges opened the scoring in the 20th minute, scoring her seventh goal of the season on a penalty kick. She has now tied her 2011 output of seven goals just 11 games into this season.

Just over a minute later, senior forward Michelle Young headed in her third goal of the season off a pass by freshman midfielder Karla Pineda to put the Mean Green up 2-0. Pineda's assist is her fourth of the season, and her second in as many games.

"It was big for us to win our first conference games especially when they're on the road, which is never an easy thing," said Young. "We got the two [wins] like we wanted and now it's time to start focusing for the upcoming games next weekend."

ULM (3-7-0, 0-1-0) cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 26th minute when Karlea Fehr took a pass from Cerene Arsenault and outran the North Texas defense to score her third goal of the season.

That was the only goal North Texas goalkeeper Jackie Kerestine surrendered to the Warhawks. The Euless, Texas native made five saves to pick up her seventh win of the season and her 21st career win, which now places her in sole possession of fifth place on the all-time list for goalkeeper wins at North Texas.

North Texas returns home to begin a four-game home stand on Friday, September 28, against South Alabama.
