DENTON, Texas (8/31/12) - Five different players scored for North Texas to help Mean Green soccer take down the Texas Southern Lady Tigers 6-0 on Friday night.

North Texas (5-0-0) scored five goals in the first half, the most in a half since the Mean Green tallied seven goals in an 11-0 win against Grambling State more than a year ago.

North Texas has also extended its unbeaten streak at home to 16 games, and hasn't lost in the last 11 games overall dating back to last season.

"Overall, I thought we played very well as a team," said head coach John Hedlund. "It was important to me to be sharp heading into next week against two nationally-ranked teams."

Freshman forward Amber Haggerty scored the first two goals of her collegiate career -- one day after her 18^th birthday -- opening the scoring in the 18^th minute with a beaming shot past Texas Southern goalkeeper Liliana Hernandez from 35 yards out. Her second goal, which was the only second-half tally for North Texas, came in the 67^th minute.

"We will work no matter what," said Haggerty. "We play until the end. On top of that, our second team works even harder off the bench, so that makes us a really good team."

Haggerty and freshman Karla Pineda assisted on senior forward Michelle Young's second goal of the season in the 28^th minute to extend the Mean Green lead to 2-0.

Just over two minutes later, Pineda notched her second goal of the season on her 18^th birthday -- her first since scoring the game-winner in the regular-season opener against Oral Roberts.

Senior forward Katelyn Ross had a chance to extend the lead to 4-0 in the 34^th minute, but was tripped in the box. Junior defender Kelsey Hodges stepped in to take the penalty kick and converted her team-leading fourth goal of the year.

Freshman Molly Grisham headed in her first-career goal in the 42^nd minute off a corner kick by defender Alli Guderian for the Mean Green's fifth goal of the first half.

North Texas had 24 shots in the first half, followed by 29 in the second. The 53 total shots is the second-most in a single game in North Texas history, just three shots behind the record of 56 shots in a 22-0 win against Troy on August 31, 1997. The Mean Green had 17 shots on goal compared to two by the Lady Tigers.

North Texas goalkeepers Jackie Kerestine and Haley Riley each made one save in 45 minutes of play, with Kerestine getting the starting nod and Riley entering into the game in the second half.

Texas Southern had six yellow cards and one red card, while North Texas kept its composure and did not receive a single card.

The Mean Green's scheduled game against Grambling on Sunday, September 2, has been canceled due to poor field conditions. North Texas will return to action on Friday, September 7, at home against Baylor.
