DENTON -- On a day when five Mean Green seniors were honored, it was the seniors that led the North Texas soccer team to a 3-1 win against Louisiana Tech, capturing the Conference USA regular-season title outright on Sunday afternoon at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.

"First of all congratulations to Louisiana Tech on a great regular season," North Texas head coach John Hedlund said. "They are going to be a force for anyone with all of their depth in next week's tournament. I'm really proud of this team winning the regular-season title, they had big shoes to fill from last year's team and after losing seven starters, but it was the seniors and my captains all year leading the way. This conference is simply getting more balanced with all fourteen teams battling it out every week, there are no easy wins. That's why it's so special for me to go 9-0 at home this year and win our third consecutive regular season championship."

Three seniors were involved in all three goals for the Mean Green. For the fourth time this season, Hailey Sutton scored the opening goal to put North Texas ahead in the 14th minute. After Louisiana Tech tied the game off a free kick, Marchelle Davis gave the Mean Green the lead again in the 45th minute with a penalty kick. Rachel Holden sealed the win with a header off a free kick in the 82nd minute. Davis had two assists in the game.

The game took a sharp turn in the 32nd minute when junior defender Tori Phillips received a red card and was ejected for retaliating after she was fouled. With the score tied, 1-1, the Mean Green were forced to play with 10 players for the rest of the game.

A key play came right before half when Davis played a through ball to Sabrina Munguia inside the box. Munguia dribbled towards the left-hand side of the goal and was taken down by a LTech defender, drawing a penalty kick. Davis converted her third penalty kick of the season, which ended up being the gamewinner.

Late in the game, North Texas drew a foul outside the 18-yard box. Davis lofted a ball into the six-yard box that Holden headed into the back of the net.
