DENTON -- The North Texas soccer team returned to winning ways at home in a big way on Sunday. Freshman Berklee Peters scored a hat trick to lead the Mean Green to a 5-0 win against Houston Baptist at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.

"It was a good team win against a tough HBU team that was a NCAA tournament team just a year ago," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "Credit Taylor with the two early goals that set the tone for the game and then Berklee had a big day coming off the bench to get the hat trick."

Taylor Torres started the scoring with two goals in the opening 22 minutes, and Peters sealed the win by scoring the final three tallies. North Texas dominated possession, outscoring the Huskies, 35-11.

"I thought the offense overall played really well today, constantly applying pressure on their backline and creating opportunities throughout the entire match," said Hedlund. "Defensively, we were pretty strong again with our backline and both the keepers leading the way. I thought Red (Lauryn Bruffett) played outstanding in the defensive mid spot today."

Houston Baptist almost had the first goal of the game after Sabriah Spencer chipped the ball over goalkeeper Miranda Schoening off a breakaway in the fourth minute. Senior defender Tori Phillips cleared the ball off the goal line for the team save.

Phillips turned the momentum around a minute later by playing a long ball up the field to Torres. The junior forward ran onto the ball, sped past her defender and slid the ball past the Huskies' goalkeeper for the score.

Torres scored again in the 22nd minute after Natalie Newell crossed the ball into the box from the left-hand side. Torres one-timed the ball into the back of the net for her third goal of the season.

Peters came off the bench to score her first career goal in the 34th minute. She took the rebound off the crossbar and buried her shot past the goalkeeper to make it 3-0. Senior Cat Sebazco had the initial shot on goal that went off the crossbar.

Newell found the end line again in the 54th minute and crossed the ball to Peters in front of the net for the first goal of the second half. Peters recorded her hat trick with an individual effort in the 64th minute. After the Huskies' goalkeeper saved an initial shot from Newell, Peters collected the rebound, dribbled the ball into the box and took a shot from the right-hand side of the goal past the keeper.
