May 14, 2015

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The first day of the NCAA Regional tournament for the North Texas men's golf team saw wild swings up and down the leaderboard as they finished tied for eighth place after 18 holes. The Mean Green, who near the end of their opening round held the overall lead, stumbled down the stretch to shoot an 11-over par 292.

NT is tied with No. 41 Iowa and trails the No. 20 Oklahoma State by six shots for the final spot in the top-five. The top-five teams advance to the NCAA Finals.

North Texas sat in a tie for the lead with No. 16 South Florida, but the Mean Green's final hole, the par-3 No. 9 proved to be its undoing on the day. North Texas played the par-3 at 7-over and slipped out of the lead and the top-five.

Jason Roets and Cory Churchman are tied for 20th place after the opening round at 2-over par 72. Roets was 2-under par, but had a quadruple bogey on his last hole to slide to 2-over. Churchman was steady on the day with just two bogeys and 16 pars.

Juan Munoz is tied for 30th place after shooting a first-round of score of 3-over par 73. Munoz notched one birdie on the day. Freshman Michael Cotton is one stroke behind at 4-over par 74. Cotton was even-par on the day headed to his final three holes, but played them at 4-over par to slip into a tie for 39th place. Alejandro Villasana is tied for 72nd place after shooting 9-over par on the day.

South Florida has a one stroke lead over Ohio State, followed by No. 32 San Diego State, No. 5 Vanderbilt and No. 20 OSU.
