It's hard to believe that the spring semester is already over!  Our student-athletes will be taking finals next week and we are anticipating it will be one of our best semesters in the classroom.  As most of our sports wind down for the year, my staff and I will be moving along at full-speed trying to prepare for what will undoubtedly be the most anticipated fall in North Texas history!

In the last several weeks, we welcomed Karen Aston to our Mean Green Family. It was with great pleasure when I introduced her as our new head women's basketball coach at our annual team banquet. Aston returns to Denton after spending two seasons as an assistant coach with the Mean Green from 1996-98. She has spent the last four seasons as the head coach at Charlotte.

Want to meet Coach Aston? Well, we're coming to you! Join me at one of the upcoming Mean Green Club's Coaches Caravans where we will be bringing the coaches to you!  Along with Coach Aston, head football coach Dan McCarney, head men's basketball coach Johnny  Jones and other Mean Green coaches will be coming to talk all things North Texas in your backyard. As our spring sports come to a close I am proud to share with you of all the success that the Mean Green has accomplished.

The record-breaking season for the North Texas women's golf team continues when it was selected to play in the NCAA Women's Golf Regionals for the first time in school history. The Mean Green will join 23 other teams at the NCAA Central Regional tournament which will be held at Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Indiana May 5-7. North Texas is the No. 17 seed in the Central Region.  If they can advance from the regional tournament they would play at College Station, Texas for the NCAA Championship.

Men's Golf Team had an unforgettable trip to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Alabama this past week.  Sophomore Carlos Ortiz took home the individual medalist trophy after having the lowest score for the tournament.  The team was in great position to also bring home a title after trailing Denver by just four strokes heading into the final round.  Unfortunately, the weather forced the final round to be cancelled and the team came home with a second-place trophy.  The men's team will learn of its postseason fate on Monday, May 9 when the NCAA announces its regional pairings.

Mean Green track will enter the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Championships with 19 marks in the top-five of the conference including top marks in five different events. North Texas' senior Alysha Adams currently sits No. 4 in the NCAA West and 13th in the nation in the 100-meter hurdles while freshman Terrance Williams holds down the top spot in the SBC and 15th in the NCAA West in the long jump.

As I watch the progress starting to wrap up on the Stadium outside my window, the excitement of what is to come for our Mean Green fans is more than exhilarating!  Every day, I am amazed at what we as a Mean Green family have been able to accomplish to raise the profile of this university and this athletics department.  I hope to see you at the various upcoming events throughout the summer. Now more than ever is time to join us on this exciting ride!

GO MEAN GREEN!!
